Chopper's Sick... needs a Doctor

First of all, I'd like to wish everyone blue skys and winds at your
back! The weather is great right now, but I'm resitant to ride because
the sled's acting-up. It started about a month ago when I thought I
got some bad gas (or the bike, that is) or maybe some junk in the
carburator. I'll be riding along and all of a sudden there's
hesitation, backfiring, and sometimes she quits. She'll start again
and idle O.K., but with increased RPMs, she'll act-up again and quit.
At times, even a hiccup when she quits. Not being a Mechanic, I'm only
To start with, it's a Harley and you have to put up with one cylinder
No...it's an S&S 113.

robbing mixture from the other cylinder because the firing order is 1,
2, blub, blub...

And you've adjusted the idle mixture too lean (or the carburetor is
dirty inside, or you have an intake air leak) and you've probably
overcompensated for that by richening up the high speed mixture.
That very well could be.

confused and frustrated. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!
Here's the technical data:
-Three year old S&S 113 C.I. with 3,800 miles.
-S&S Super G Carburator with a Velocity Stack (Head and Crankcase
breathers are good).
-Crane Cams HI-4 Dual Fire Race Ignition 8-1100.
-Spark Advance is set at T.D.C.
-Rev Lim is set at approx. 6800.
-New Spark Plugs.
-New Fuel Filter.
-Drained Carburator Bowl.
-Ran Lucas Carb Cleaner in one tank of gas.
-Air/Fuel Mixture is at 1 and 1/3rd turns from closed position.
-Elevation is approx. 250 feet (Fayetteville, NC).
Please ask if any additional data would help. Thanks.
V/R,
David

Bet your spark plugs come out all black and furry....
Ryder Rick,
Just remember to keep yer pants leg outta the velocity stack,

(makes 'em run kinda rich....)
Rick,
Great post and I too, thank you for the how-to.
Dave

You're absolutely right! It appears like the surface of the piston is
also black and furry. Any suggestions on what adjustments might fix
that?
Look at the suggestions prviously posted regarding my posting of my
bike misfiring etc...

I had the same problems and when I reved my bike from 2000 to 3000
RPM's it started missing and misfiring and the tach was jumping
erraticaly...

I changed the carb, coil, points, electronic ignition, plugs , wire
leads etc etc,,,the real problem was found by using a voltmeter to
trace the short in the wiring somewhere...its running fine now...it was
an electrical fault causing the problem, don't spend money chasing the
problem. Have the shop FIND the problem first don't try to buy your way
out....
