Softail Passenger Footboard Installation

Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to provide.

I bought a set of passenger footboards for my 04 Heritage on Saturday.
There's a hex head bolt that you have to remove to get the original pegs
off, and then there's another bolt that is provided with the footboards
which is to be used to secure them to the frame. The problem that I ran
into is that my bike came with the bag protection bars, so that the bolt
supplied is just a touch too short. And the original bolt is too long. So,
it looks like I'll have to get another. Question: Does anybody know if
these bolts are stainless?
Any fasteners that I have to replace are always done so with
stainless. Hard to go wrong.
Greasy, be vewy vewy carefull here. Stainless is cool in non critical
parts. When you get into critical stuff yield strengths are generally
less and hardness is less. With carbon steels you are generally
looking above 100,000 psi yield strengths in bolts up to 5/8"
diameter. It is very tough if not impossible to find Stainless bolts
with yeild strengths above 75,000 psi.
I'll have to yield to your obvious greater knowledge on fasteners but
I still will use stainless where possible since I don't have to worry
or fret with rust. I'll keep your advice in mind though.
Not all fasteners ya buy are "critical" so you'll probably
do OK, and if need be, chrome works...

As long as we are talking bolts, are you aware that there is a huge
quanity of counterfiet bolts on the market? Bolts marked for grade 5
that come no where near it. I am pretty carefull when buying bolts for
critical applications.
Last purchasing contract I wrote for nuts and bolts
specified "Made in USA only" in an attempt to minimize our
exposure to bogus fasteners. Our previous contract had been
written "Made in North America" to allow in a vendor who's
plant was in Canada.....and then we found bogus stuff in our
bins (which ended the contract).
