On June 15th, 2006, almost to the minute (maybe by the time I finish this
post it'll be to the minute) I returned to work and posted the news that I
had just purchased and drive off the lot a brandy new 2006 Ural GearUp.
Let's get Shirley over here with some drinks.

Thanks. To celebrate I took a SYT from the office for a ride in the hack at
lunch. She asked me before about going for a ride, so based on the weather
I told her we could do it this Friday (this was earlier in the week that we
were talking). I brought an extra helmet and at lunch we took a little spin
on some backroads.

This is when I realized a major drawback of the hack. When excelerating on
the bike (stop snickering over there, Tom) or taking some tight turns with a
well endowed passenger you don't get the added bonus of having them hold on
a little tighter. Still, it was nice to get out of the office for a ride,
typically I just work through lunch.


And the posts have been fascinating.

I came up a little shy of my goal of averaging 1000kms per month, right now
I'm at about 11,320km. For the most part the bike is just used as a
commuter to get me to work and back, which is only about 15km each way.

I've had the bike back to the dealer once for work, not repairs, just work.
Since it was due for its safety inspection and needed new front rubber I
decided to drop the bike off at the dealer before I headed out of town for a
week. Aside from this, all maintenance has been done at my place and has
been pretty easy. The hardest part was removing the final drive, made
difficult by the fact that there's a second shaft that runs over to the
sidecar wheel.

I still have issues with water and the ingition system, but one of these
days I may upgrade to the Ducati ignition system, new for '07. The salt was
hard on the bike over the winter and I can see some areas where there is a
slight rusty discoloration. It's certainly about to rust away on me, but it
shows a bit older than what you would expect for a 1 year old bike. After a
year the shifting is still rough, although it has smoothed out a little bit,
especially between first and second and third and forth.

The bike left me stranded at work twice after sitting in heavy rain all day,
but I'm sure that if I knew then what I know now I would have been able to
get it going.

Carb freezing in the winter may still be an issue, nothing has been done on
my part that would alleviate this. I figure that the lap blanket helps with
water getting in the airbox, since I don't think the bike has quit since I
put it on because of this. It quit running because of the coils shorting
out, but to my knowledge not from water in the airbox/carbs.

So far after one year I'm quite happy with the purchase. If all goes well
I'll be taking it for a pretty decent trip from Halifax to Vermont, then to
Ottawa and back to Halifax sometime in September. At this point I'm

I don't think so, I just can't recall when it is, something like the third
weekend. Knowing this would still require me to look it up on a calender,
something that wouldn't have taken less time for me to do than to write out
this explanation. And yet here I am, still typing and still not looking it
up.
