S&S Super E flat spot

Just wanted to share my experience with a Super E and the bad flat spot
that it had on my 95 FLHTP. At about 2600 to 2900 rpm when holding the
throttle steady, it was way lean and felt like I was running with a
parachute strung out behind me. If you rolled the throttle on easy, it
would fall flat on it's face. If you really nailed it, the
accellerator pump would shoot enough gas to get you going and into the
upper speed ranges.

None of the local vendors seemed to stock jets for the carburetor, so I
did some reading and found that the culprit was most likely the
intermediate jet being too lean. I figured that by using wire sized
numbered drills that I could drill it out and get it right. Even if I
ruined it, I could still buy a couple of jets and do it the right way.

So, I took the carburetor off and found that the main jet was a 70, and
the intermediate jet was an 028 which was the smallest of the
recommended range for my application. I took a drill bit which
measured about an 030 and went to work with a pin vise (by hand) to
drill it out. It took all of about 5 seconds. I also noticed that the
accellerator pump was adjusted for a full shot, which really isn't
necessary.

I put it back together, set the pump at about one and a half turns out
and went for a ride. The net result was virtually perfect. Flat spot
gone. No popping when blipping the throttle. Pulls good. Cost of
"tuning"....FREE.
Well done. Sometimes a little thought, effort and luck wins the day.
