1973 Sporty won't start!
Good friend of mine is having some scooter problems, any thoughts?
Besides having you as a friend?
No.
1973 XLCH
Runnin down the road suddenly died. It won't start now. Pops through
carb every once in awhile.
Getting gas through the carb OK.
New points.
New coil.
Getting spark OK.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated. (even those that will make me laugh)
Mmmm , hadn't thought of that .
John , is he getting a lot of sparking at the points ?
Drinks are on me.
My first thoughts would be ignition timing jumped and/or a bad condenser,
plugs, etc..
Just cause it's getting spark, doesn't mean that it's a good spark or at the
right time.

Mine did that one time in NorCal. The bolt holding the advance unit
to the end of the cam had broken. Have him pull the points plate off
and see if pieces of the advance unit fall out in his hand.
Water in the tank.
Kel the 'wild guessin' slug'

Do a compression check. Your going to find the camming is way off.
Sporties are famous for spitting needle bearings down into the cam train
and jamming it. Watch Oil lite when cranking.. see if it goes out.
No spark , sorry 'bout that.
Everything hooked up right ? Corroded connection on one of the wires
to/from the coil ? They can be corroded totally off and held in place by the
insulating sleeve on the terminal ... I'm bettin' on a loose wire/bad
connection somewhere .
Scratch my timing comment then.
Problms start after all the "new" stuff?
Always go to the last thing changed.
Just cuz they are new, doesn't mean they don't break.
Don't know how they are set up in a sporty, but i've seen car points
break, so they didn't open up no mo'
Coulda boogered a connection too...

Check to see if the bolt holding the advance mechanism is still intact,
as well as the advance unit itself.
They are OK Les, thanks.
It was worth a shot, I've seen it a few times.
I sent him over to sportster.org with his manual. It can be challenging
to be the middleman sometimes.
We can drink beer and watch.
Yeah, might be the best way to go.
Sounds like the timing is borked.
I'll pass that on - thanks.

After replacing the black & furry sparkplugs....
Clean the sparkplugs.
Replace the plugs.
They're cheap.
And the wires too.
If its poppin through the carb sometimes, it is sometimes getting
spark. Too much advance or too lean pop through the carb. Not enough
advance and too rich pop through the pipe. Sounds like a loose wire,
points with bad gap, or dirt in the petcock/filter/carb/jet.
Does he have any circuit breakers in the wiring? Had one of those
drive me nuts last fall late at night. On, off, on, off..........
