More Harley advice needed...

Hello once again everyone! Grab a cold on on me and prepare to
enlighten me with your wisdom...

My newly acquired 03 Deuce has been modified by it's previous owner.
It has only 2100 miles on it (barely broken in). I'm told the carb(s?)
No doubt. Congrats.

were "jetted". It has a hyper-charger air intake. It has MGS custom
pipes that appear to be nothing more than hollow bent tubing. It's
LOUD. It's VERY LOUD. Being a former Honda guy, this is going to take
some getting used to but I think I'll adjust. What I am curious about
is the "back-firing" when shifting, decelerating, or pretty much any
time the throttle is released and the RPM's are dropping off. One of
the buddies with a HD Heritage Classic thinks that "cool" and wishes
his bike with Screaming Eagle pipes made the same sounds.

So, my questions are these:

Is this a desirable sound or is this an indication of a problem such
as improperly adjusted carburation or timing?
I wouldn't desire it myself. Could be an exhaust leak. Probably the
exhaust itself. I'm guessing there aren't any baffles? That probably
doesn't help. If it were me I'd ditch the "hollow bent tubing" and get
a good 2 into 1. YMMV.
The pipes are (I'm told) custom MGS pipes are are supposed to be
"really cool" and desirable. Is it possible to purchase a "jetted
Only if making a lot of unnecessary noise is really cool (and desirable).

carb." directly from the HD dealership and just bolt it on? The carb
Yep. They should be right next to the pre-mapped fuel injection systems.

has a HD logo stamped into the side of it, but, it does not have one
of those twisty idle adjustment thingies I see on so many carburated
Harleys, so I wonder if the whole carb was replaced.
With all of the aftermarket folks stamping H-D logos on their products, it's
hard to say.

Seriously, it's an OEM carb and an after-market "really cool" air cleaner.
(They got the former owner coming and going.)
web-search this group and see how many times MGS pipes have been mentioned.
As far as I know you're the first. I think if they were really desirable
you'd have seen them talked about here more often.

And for the "twisty idle adjustment thingie", I've never seen one on a
harley carb, just aftermarket. Not saying it couldn't be done, I dunno,
just haven't seen it done.

There's no reason to change to a different carb if all the bike has is
breather work and pipes. The stock carb can provide plenty of fuel for
any mods you make excluding major head work, bore, etc.

Popping and backfiring on decel are a sign of incorrect jetting for the
setup you've got. Take it to a competent mechanic.

Should I just take the bike to the HD dealership and have them check
the mixture on their computer?
Now you're making sense.
Mike, I was re-reading your response and a thought came to mind about
your " Seriously, it's an OEM carb and an after-market "really cool"
air cleaner.> (They got the former owner coming and going.)"
statement.

I was at my local HD dealership over the weekend and at the parts
counter I saw them selling Hyper-Chargers right there in the
dealership. So, if the dealer sells, installs, and sets up Hyper-
Chargers and HD factory jet kits, how bad can they be and how is that
"getting them coming and going" with regard to the original owner
buying stuff right over the counter?
You're kidding, aren't you...

Howz 'bout I call you a Taxi, instead?

Pan-Yer a Taxi-head
Oh fine.
What has RMH come to?
We have gotten down to name calling now?!

ASSHOLE#104 Len
Well, I NEVER!

Surely you're not going to try and convince me that the fine
upstanding folks at HD are just interested in making a buck on selling
high priced add-ons without regard to what's in the best interest of
their customers or their corporate image?

OK, you've convinced me. I'm convinced that there are probably a few
good intentioned, decent people who are members of, or frequent the
RMH group. I'm equally convinced that there are at least as many, if
not more who are arrogant, obnoxious, feel that they are somehow
superior, to everyone, especially those who haven't been around as
long as they have and who have legitimate questions or concerns, or,
who dare to raise their hand and ask a question.

So, I suppose I'll get my answers elsewhere. You've succeeded in
making a new Harley Davidson owner feel as though all other Harley
Davidson owners really are obnoxioius assholes. (And you wonder why
you often get a bad rap.)

If you see me out and about in South Florida, Holiday Park, or
Primanti Brothers at the beach, stop by and say hello. Introduce
yourself and give yourself the opportunity to let me buy you a real
drink and let's talk a while. I'm all for second chances and perhaps
over a real brewski you'll be able to turn around my first impression
of all of you. (Which is, for the most-part, not good.)

Just curious,
Caz
They sell custom mirrors and stuff too. Doesn't mean it affects your
performance. Some folks think they look cool, so there is a market for
them. Harley knows its something that's not going to harm the bike (if
their mechanics rejet the carb/remap the EFI), so they're making money
from it with no danger to themselves.
I have had that same experience with duals and no baffles. It backfires when
you drop a gear going down hills.
Actually to be honest the G/F and I both enjoy the sound. Been doing that
for years and no engine problems at all.
Runs fine, idles OK, easy to start....it just backfires when you gear
down....

Please set me straight.

Thanks, and try not to laugh at me too hard.
