Yes

ie. unscrew old one from surrounding units, disconnect from power
switch, slide out and do the reverse to install the new one?
Yes

(Ours died tonight - won't heat above 60 degrees and we desperately need
You may be needing a Part P registered electrician to make the
electrical connections if your existing / new cooker is not of the 3
pin plug variety.

a new one ASAP)
That'll be £250
At least.

Although, because we're having to order it, there are some really good
deals on decent brands out there.
By all means buy a new one but fixing these things is often simple.

As an example, several years ago one hob ring on my mum's standalone
electric cooker stopped working. Swapping elements over did not fix the
problem so I took the back off the thing. Hey presto, there was a
dessicated mouse stradling the L&N terminal on the wiring for the problem
element. Remove mouse and current flows throught the element again.

Other problems fixed over the years are due to heat causing insulation
problems. Soon fixed with a bit of heat shrink or heat resistant paste.
