OT: Adding DVD recorder into Sky +???

Somebody here must know about this, so here goes.Numptie talk follows,
as that's my capability level:
Current TV/Sky+ etc setup is:
Sony TV with 3 scarts.
1 x DVD player
1 x Sky+
1 x VCR
VCR is broken so I bought a separate DVD recorder ( DVDR, I'll call it
), to hive off Sky+ and also digicam stuff.
Now, I'd have thought that I'd be able to replace the VCR with the DVDR
using the VCR connections. So I tried that, and it's not happy. I can't
see the menu screen of the DVDR appear on the TV which I need to start
setup / source / disc formatting etc.
I flipped through the source feeds for the TV in case it was using, say
AV2, but couldn't see it on any setting.
Is it worth ripping the lot out and re-cabling it? Or am I possibly
missing something fundamental?
Please let me know if I should list specific info, such as model type
etc.
I have posted this in a UK Sky NG but the speed - if not clarity! - of
UKRM response always gets me.

After a lot of fiddling about and disappointment, I gave in and bought
an AV Control Centre 2:-
Very simple; even the missus can work it.
