What is the deal with MSRP in the motorcycle world?

More a rant than anything... I complain but still I buy...

Harley dealers get close to or over MSRP even today for new bikes.
Local Honda dealers try to get MSRP, too. OK, I can live with that -
it's like the car world; you are responsible for negotiating the best
deal you can.

What I have a problem with is the after-market for accessories.

In the musical instrument world MSRP is a joke, so it's common to see
discounts of 30-60% off list not only for accessories but for
instruments, too. But in the bike world, e-tailers act like they're
doing you a favor if you get 10% off MSRP for aftermarket
accessories... even when buying online.
I get 15% off HD products. Mainly because I bought a bike from them.

My guitar (Schecter C-1 Blackjack) on the other hand was listed at
over $1100, on the floor for around $850 and on sale for around $650.
(Prices in Canadian $ after import)

US retail is $819 but Zzzzounds has it on sale for $440

I haven't noticed pedals or other accessories at much of a discount
though.

The best I saw was 15% off Mesa Boogie Nomad series amps. They had
been discontinued.

I don't expect those kinds of discounts in the automotive trade but I
know they can do better.
An independent dealer (ex-dealership) sells HD parts for 20% off all
the time.

I can see going into your local MC shop and paying near MSRP (even then
I have a problem with it), but online retailers doing the same?

Come on, a Cobra sissy bar for $225? A compatible luggage rack for
another $117? A backrest insert for $72? Add in installation and you're
looking at over $450 for a complete backrest! Want a fork-mounted
Take that money, but a used welder and some raw material, and build one
yourself!

windshield? Be prepared to shell out another 4 or 5 bills to get the
shield and lowers and extensions that you'll need.

I know, OEM accessories are expensive so I can live with Hondaline
charging and arm and a leg for accessories for my MC, but how about all
these aftermarket accessory makers like Kuryakyn, MC Enterprises,
Cobra, etc?

Is MSRP really that accurate a reflection of value in the MC add-ons
market?

Your opinions welcome...
