Air in brake line?
|
Shirley - set up the house please,
Pondering a slight problem with the new scootah that was in for some
recall and warranty work recently. First off, man, the new dealership
up here is the ballz! Came and picked up my bike, did the work and
delivered it back to me at N/C, two days ahead of schedule I might add.
Color me shocked, fer sure. Haven't seen this level of service since,
well forever, I'd have to say.

Shoot, that maybe deserves mentioning over at hawgeyes stealer-dealer page.
Carrot and stick.

Just fired one off. Thanks for the reminder.

The one thing I had 'em check while the bike was in was the rear brake.
When you stomp on it at speed, you can hear that it's got air in the
line. It doesn't really feel spongy, but it sure sounds like it needed
a bleeding. They bled the line out, vac'd it they did - but that
didn't take care of the problem. Still sounds like there's still air
in the line.
|
I'm trying to imaging being able to hear air movement in the brake line
over the engine noise. I'm thinking it's gotta be something else Ken.
Specially if there's no spongy.

I'm thinkin the same thing, Randy.
No Problem, No Dysfunction, Just some unfamiliar noise with an unfamiliar
bike?
Ride it, Ken. You have another brake if there's a malfunction with the back
one.
YMMV, JMHO.

The wrench that did the work said that he personally bled the line, and
to give it some time, brakes need to seat and such and that'd probably
take care of the problem, but my gut's telling me that the sound I'm
hearing is indicative of air getting into the system somehow. Maybe a

You sure that it's not a warped disc?
Just pondering the thought.
It happened on the ol' bagger.
|
Doesn't feel like it Jim - there's no "pulsating" going on - just the
sound of air in the system when you apply the rear brake. I warped a
disk on the '02 - symptomatically it felt different from this.
|
I'm kinda still cornfuzed.
Just what does "air" sound like in the system?
Is it a "gurgling" kinda noise?
|
Take a leak on a flat rock. That's kinda what it sounds like.
Or better yet, take your wheel off, loosen up your master cylinder
cover a bit, depress the brake lever once or twice and put it all back
together. Now take your bike out and hit the brakes.
Yep, it sounds *exactly* like that.

pinhole in the line, or air's getting in there somehow (maybe a leak in
the master cylinder gasket)? No signs of brake fluid anywhere
indicating a problem.
Maybe the wrench is right on the mark?
(shrug??)

You can't "hear" air in a brake line.
It's just the new pads and new rotors getting used to each other.
|
Sure ya can........I'm frikkin deaf and I've heard it plenty of times.
Sounds like when ya get air in a big hydraulic system......only
smaller....
Soon as Ken said he heard air in the lines, I knew exactly what he was
talking about.........

I once had a hydrualic system acting a little like that. It turned out
to be spall from the machine shop that had wedged across a fitting.
Just a "maybe."
