Note to self part 3
|
Yes I know, I've missed the boat a bit.
Anyway, note to self: when cleaning out brake dust out of brake drum,
don't blow it so it lands directly on your face. I predict a very red
mark covering half my face when I wake up tomorrow, there's been a
slight burning sensation there for the last few hours.
Needless to say, I won't be making that mistake again.
|
Please tell me this was the Bantam.
Because if it was, the dust will have been asbestos, and you're going to
die.
|
You're a bad bad man, it's part of why we like you.
|
|
You'll be disappointed to find out it was the RXS100, the shoes in
question are a few months old EBCs.
Anyone know what they make EBC brake shoes out of?
|
Not asbestos.
You've nothing to worry about.
|
|
It'll only be white asbestos, the Bantam used blue.

Old Bantam pistons and crankcases
|
LMFAO!
Sorry, it *was* funny...
|
|
So *that's* where they've all gone. Well I always considered my Bantam a
part of me, now it really is.
|
|
|
|
I was too nice to post that.

Hate to disappoint you but the risk is negligible. Asbestos based brakes
produce dust that contains less than 1% asbestos fibres and most of these
are too short to present a risk. Analyses of brake dust have shown that it
contains less than 1% asbestos, most of which is short chrysotile fibers
less than 1 µm in length, with much of the asbestos having been converted to
forsterite due to the heat generated during the braking process - see
Williams RL, Muhlbaier JL. (1982) Asbestos brake emissions. Environ Res; 29:
70-82.
|
You know too much on this subject!
If anyone's wondering, my face is now fine :)
|
Personally I was pleased to discover this as I have worked on many cars and
bikes back in the 70s when the the standard way of removing brake dust from
brake drums was to blow it out, regardless of whether or not you or anyone
in the vivinity might inhale the results. What worries me more is the

Um, some of us still do.....

asbestos string that was sometimes used to seal ill-fitting exhausts. I
used it on my Norton Model 50 many years ago - worked very well but I
sometimes wonder if I ever inhaled any fibres from it.
