OT: Cage Performance Brake Pads

Does anyone have experience of so-called 'uprated' pads on cars?

When I did a track day a couple of weeks ago, I was getting serious
amounts of fade and a nasty burning smell after 5 or so laps.

The fluid is new (although I'm thinking going to 5.1 might help) and the
discs are all good. I'm working on something to get extra cooling to
them, though.
From my experience, the 3 most important things to sort are cooling,
cooling and cooling. [1]

You could get other pads, but the most important aspect is probably that
new pads will give you a greater volume to absorb the heat (but you've
still got to get rid of the heat somewhere). Use a bonwick to make some
holes in the bumper and route through some vacuum hose or similar

If the brakes have faded, you'll need to replace the fluid anyway.

[1] The BX GTi would lay waste to a set of pads in less than 20 laps of
Castle Combe; if I'd done more track days I'd have opted for the BX16V
brakes/vented disks/vented bumper combo
Have you thought about improving your technique to give the brakes an
easier life while reducing your lap times? :-)
Don't blame me, blame my instructor.

He told me I wasn't hitting the brakes anywhere near hard enough.
Something to do with getting plenty of weight over the front to combat
under-steer.

So, I was kind of thinking EBC Greenstuff, just because I don't really
know of any alternatives.
I found EBC Greenstuff a little grabby, they're designed for fast road so
have to work from when Joe Chav gets up in the morning and is doing 70 by
the end of his close in his corsa.

In a whole different league are the redstuff pads which have been great on
my scooper.
They don't last as long as cheapo or OEM pads though, but there's always a
trade off.

I'ver not tried the yellowstuff pads.

One of the best improvements I had on my old cooper was moving up to a cross
cut / drilled ebc disk .

A lot cheaper than a brembo/tarox/etc big brake conversion as well.
Good pointers, thanks. Pads are first, if that doesn't make a big enough
difference, I'll be looking for drilled and grooved discs.

Going to look at molishing some cooling ducts running from the front fog
blanking plates, too.
Awaiting flamage from Pip...
it's not so much flamage. if i can only see quoted text in my window, i just
can't be bothered to scroll down to see your original content. i'll simply
move onto the next article. i expect many other people do the same. you
might as well not have written anything.
You appear to be undergoing the assimilation process.
I have greenstuff on the Giulietta. They work really well but need to be
hot. Coming off a motorway after a long cruise in the wet and
approaching the roundabout can be interesting......
a call to Demon Tweeks

would get the info you need I guess Steve?
I want real-world experience, not what some kid with a Saxo and Lexus
lights reckons are 'wikkid, innit'.

(Demon Tweeks used to be good, but they appear to have mutated into yet
another re-seller of tat)
The competition department is, as far as I'm aware, still "professional".
Whenever I've been there there's usually a smattering of nice cars there,
911's, M5's etc and rarely the front wheel drive hatch brigade, mainly cos I
think people point and laugh at them. They seem to prefer Halfords car park.

They're only about 5 mile away from my gaff.
I heard various ruminations that EBC Greenstuff pads aren't really suited to
vaguely heavy cars and tend to drop to bits. I'd be tempted to go down the
Mintex M1144 route myself, although mintex also have some more "consumer"
marketed performance pads that might come in cheaper.
I don't want 'consumer' pads.

I really want someone with experience of track use to give me some
pointers.

At the moment, Ferodo pads look like the best option - DS2500/3000
'Racing' seem to be the recommended choice.

I have at least 2 more track days booked and want to be able to get more
than 1 out / 1 in and 4 fast laps at a time next time out.
Umm the 944 had some. I think they were EBC red though. Did the job and
didn't fade. Why not just go for the yellows though.
