OT: New laptop suggestions
|
Any suggestions on a replacement for my Sony laptop would be most welcomed
from the knowledge database of UKRM's please.
I would like a quality screen as I use Photoshop CS2 to manage RAW files and
to do work on the company website. Battery life is also important and
something which is faster than my old dog of a Sony PCG-FX401

The Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook S7020 is very nice, IMHO. Best laptop
I've ever had. Superb screen with very high res - 1400 x 1050. I
imagine this would be pretty handy for Photoshop. WiFi and Bluetooth
as standard.
And no, I don't work for them - just a happy user.
|
Have they improved the battery life? When I worked for them, the notebooks
were pretty poor on that.
|
As I found out.
Although, I only bought a laptop to be a portable desktop i.e. only ever
used in 1 of 2 locations 35 miles apart. It was fine for this purpose and
lasted the full duration of my 3 year degree on mains power.

Battery life is pretty good actually... way way better than my
previous laptop, an HP NX9005, which only gave about an hour of power.
As always with these things, battery life depends on what you're
doing.
If you have an intensive app, WiFi and Bluetooth on, PM settings at
"always on" and the screen brightness on max, I'd say it gives just
under 2 hours of juice.
On the other hand, if it's Word/Excel type work, hard disk power off
after a couple of mins, and with the brightness turned down a bit it
can give 4 hours or more.
If battery life is the biggest issue, it can take a second battery in
place of the DVD-RW drive. What's not to like? ;)

Oh and a wireless thingy for working at home...
Thanks chaps and chapesses

Budget?
I'm supadelighted with my Acer 3613WLMi from ebuyer. 1.5gig celeron M,
512MB, 80Gig, 15.4 WXGA clearbrite screen and 802.11g for a few quid
short of £500 delivered.
I suspect for heavy duty graphics work you could do with a little more
grunt though.

You mean the lamborghini?
|
No, I mean one of these
But the 3000 was better, more red :-)

HP NX 8220. Use one at work, and it's excellent. Widescreen, and battery
lasts for at least five hours intensive use. Get a gig of memory, though.

Sorry for the double posting, but another thought came to mind. A lot of
the high-street chains are selling cheap laptops with Via processors.
having never heard of these until recently, I would avoid them. I dont know
if its the same company that makes Via chipsets, and these are not the best
around anyways.
Another thing that I should point out is that AMD and Intel measure their
clock speeds differently. So an AMD 2800+ runs at 1.6GHZ, but in
benchmarks, is more comparable to an Intel processor running at 2.4 or
2.8GHZ, depending on which source you look at. the first one that came to
hand was:
However if you have time a bit of searching the web will get more, and possibly
better results... Maybe a bit of evidence to throw at the guy in the shop
who is trying to sell you something you might not need?
Again, an AMD processor may not be best for graphics applications, but they
are cheaper than Intel's. Having no experience of graphics app's I honestly
can;t say....
