OT: Buying online music

What is the FOAK view on buying music online, ideally I want MP3s and not to
be tied in to piece of software. Cheaper the better as well.
Are UK residents legally allowed to download from here?
Good question. See

Personally I look on it as piracy, but ymmv.
Crucially, if you're going to download from a site that admits to paying
no worthwhile royalties, why not just download a hooky copy. Ethically
speaking, they're one and the same.
Because it's such an excellent system to use, huge library, easy to find
what you want and you get to choose your encoding. I pay the $2 or so
average per album for that fact alone.
Royalties? if bands want to eat they can get out and play live AFAIAC.
That's a whole bunch of bands down the drain, including The Beatles'
output from 66 onwards.

Anyway isn't the distribution companies (labels?) that are raking the
lion's share?
None of which really explains why the band/writers shouldn't get paid
their percentage. If you really care about the principles just don't
buy the music at all. I can't really begrudge the price of a legit
download when it's the price of a round of drinks.
You also snipped the following part of my post which dealt with fair
free market payment.

I favour a free market approach akcherly. Set a set %age of sales that
go to the channel, say 20%, but no control of retailers. Retailers can
charge whatever they like, getting as low as their business model
allows. Job done.
AFAIK, yes.
How secure are your Card details when you buy from them though?
AIUI, they are in Russia, which hasnt got the best of reps when it comes
They are in Russia, but card transactions are handled by a Dutch
will ever get to see any card details.
and as one uses a visa with suitable payment potection it really doesn't
They seem to have stopped taking visa.
Through alltunes, the PC software, purchase pin codes
I've just 'bought' a PIN code from them[1] but haven't been given/sent
a PIN yet, AFAICT.

How does this work? Do I need to get shouty with them?

[1] Using a Mastercard.
Which doesn't accept Visa...
"Pay by credit or debit card

We accept payment made by credit or debit cards of the following payment
systems: VISA, MasterCard. "
Now select Visa as your method of payment.....
works for me once out of three goes

matter

to online security.
