OT: Nikon D200
And a Sigma 10-20 lens.
Mine, all mine.
Come on then Mr Tax Avoidance - how much?
Slightly over a grand, body & lens and a 2GB card. 12 months
interest-free credit, from Jessops, which is how I bought the new Mac
last year.
Only fly in the ointment is discovering that though the battery looks
identical, and is the same size, as my D100 battery, it actually has
three terminals, not two, and thus my spare D100 battery is no good. So
I've got to cough for a spare battery as well, I suppose.
Been playing with it, and it really is *significantly* better than the
D100.
Well that comment answers one question I was going to ask.
Which begs the question of what I do with the D100. As it seems to be
worth 350-odd quid, I might as well keep it as a back-up.
If you change your mind on that let me know as I might well be
interested in a decent Digital SLR although I'm still toying with the
idea of a D80 instead.
Well, I could indeed be swayed, as I've now discovered that my Lowenpro
camera bag is suffering from Chateau-Garage-itis, looks like. The kit
won't all fit in it, not with what it holds already.
Looking at completed Ebay auctions, a body on its own is worth nearer
£300, and I'd throw in a spare battery and the 256MB card that's in it.
I've got the box and all the accessories, leads, charger, books, etc, of
course.
OK - what kind of cards does it take, BTW?
There are SD to CF adaptors available for about a tenner on ebay if you
have shed loads of that format. Unless you are firing off 20 shot bursts
you shouldn't see a problem.
correct but if you already have > 4 gig of SD then a Tenner is well spent
if you can reuse it.
If you're still interested, call me when you get back from the US.
Will do - I'm back late next week...
That answers the next one ....
Having applied that logic before, I now actually have four Nikon
bodies[1], which is getting a bit silly...
[1] D200, D100, F100, F50
I could be interested in the D100?
... and that neatly answers what was going to be my final question.
That is a very serious camera, very serious. Nice one, how much was
that & where from?
I've got the Sigma 15-30, which is good for both film and digital. It's
quite bulky, but I've been very happy with the results, especially on film.
Ta. I like Sigma lenses, so I'll have a butchers at that.
As a matter of interest, how do you rate the Sigma lens performance
against the equivalent Nikon/Canon offerings across the board?
Dunno yet, as I haven't had the time to compare it properly. Also,
it's way wider than my nearest Nikon lens, which is an 18-35.
Just been comparing the D100 and D200 side-by-side. The 200 has much
bigger display and info screens, which is nice. AF preview operation -
I can see that being useful. faster in motordrive mode, at around
5fps. Lots more menu stuff, which I've yet to explore. And, of course,
the 10.2MP rather than 6.2MP.
Focus operation seems a bit quicker as well.

I came oh so close to getting a D200 just after they came out. But my
local Jessops wouldn't drop the price one little bit (it was Christmas
Eve too). He said they were in short supply. I did ever so slightly
enjoy watching it sit unsold on the shelf for quite some months afterwards.
When I looked at the stunning pictures on pbase and saw the cameras they
used, I realised that being a good photographer has got very little to
do with the kit. So until I work out how to do things better, I'm going
to stick with my D100 which out performs my capability in almost every way.
Thinks.
A bit like my bikes then.
