1985 Honda Nighthawk

I have a 1985 Honda Nighthawk that was recently given to me and I am
trying to get an online or downloadable manual for it. The problem is,
I don't know what model it is... I have seen listings for RC17,
CBX(followed by differing number combos), but I am not seeing these
anywhere on the bike. The VIN # is JHZRC2002FM100958 if anyone knows
Are you SURE that shouldn't be "JH2..." with a TWO and not a Zee/Zed?

JH2 Made in Japan/motorcycle
RC200 Model number
2 Check digit
F 1985
M Hamamatsu factory
100958 Serial number
NighthawkS: CB700SC: 84-86: US only, (R20 Frame)
Yup. 1985.

If you are still in doubt post up the carb numbers that is a helpful
clue too.
Thanks for the check on the "z" and "2" ... it is a 2 and not a
"zed"...CB700SC ....ok.....so, does this mean it is a 700? or is it a
750, like the guy who gave it to me said? ...700 or 750, is there a
I believe that the engine was designed as a 750 and detuned to a 700.
So your bike, unless it is modified is a 700.

site I can get on that has an online manual for this bike or a
downloadable manual?.... the guy told me it starts and runs as well
Try here:

and that the battery was new....tried to start it, and got a big
nothing... so I took out the battery and saw a date etched on the top
Nothing as in no sounds, lights etc? Did it even click?

of it ( 09-10-05) so I am figuring it's a not-so-new battery....after
an autozone attempt at charging it up; it wouldn't hold a charge....
yet another reason to get a manual and just do the basic fender to
fender checks drians and fluid replacement before I even try to push
the start button again.
After you've changed the fluids...
Try pulling out the plugs too and spraying some light weight oil in
each cylinder. With the plugs out and bike on center stand, spin the
rear wheel with bike in gear. It should spin fairly easily. If it
won't spin with the plugs out then your project bike may turn into an
eBay parts boon for someone else.

Another issue is with the title....he got the bike from a friend years
ago who owed him some money... and the story goes that this friend
aquired the bike the same way... and somewhere along that line the
title grew feet.....anyone know how I get a title for it?
web-search "Bonded title" and your state's name.

Good luck!
Before you put time and effort and money into this bike, take the VIN,
engine number and license plate information to your local state police
or highway patrol to find out if the bike is stolen. Then follow the
titling procedure that your state's DMV uses. You might have to do a
lien sale on it, or claim that it was abandoned on your property, you
might have to run down a bill of sale or advertise for a previous
owner, who knows, it varies.

Anyway thanks all for your help. Oh, and understand .....none of the
above is about a "looking a gift horse in the mouth" attitude; a free
bike is a free bike even if it will end up costing some to get
rolling. I am new to this kind of bike, having ridden mostly chopped
Triumph and Harley back in the '80's. I am working toward getting back
into a more familair type of saddle, but for now I am just glad to
have one in the stable again :)

how to get the info from that.

I would appreciate any inpu/advice. Thanks.
I would take the VIN to a Honda dealership or call them, or use Honda
customer service.

Another poster broke the VIN out into fields ... useful ... but I think
there may be some undocumented or unusual encoding of the model number.
