OT: Bose Earphones

I need some new earphones.
Bose spend A LOT of money advertising. Who do you think pays for this?
It's not difficult to buy a better quality product for less money.
traditionally sennheiser have made very good earphones. Etymotic seem to
be the leader in in-ear phones.
You're almost right: Bose are as good as it gets in consumer
headphones but Etymotic are very good. They also produce equipment
that proper acoustics people use for hearing aid testing and such, so
they are a good bet.
From their website they seem to make 'earplug' earphones and not large
earphones. If I'm going to be using earphones for several hours a day
I don't wish to have them stuck in my ear canal.

Noise cancelling (SP?) works better on planes than anywhere else.
There are good reasons for that.

I've had some decent Technics ones which cost me about £80 two years
ago and no the RHS one has started to rattle slightly so I'm looking
for something new.

They're proper large earphones which actually do BASS (and not just
little bits of bass, but proper thumpy stuff) as well as decent mid
and high ranges.

I'm thinking of getting some Bose ones which will last for a good few
years. I've never owned Bose earphones at all so I'm not sure what to
look for but my ideal ones would do proper, decent bass without
distortion along with a good quality mid and high range pronunciation
too. I want "around ear" headphones (not 'in ear' or 'on ear' ones).
Its a pity you won't consider "in the ear" phones.

I've recently got a pair of these
Shure E4g.

Cost around £200 or so in the UK, got mine from the states via EBay,
came to around £85 all in (I avoided the import charges).

They are fussy in that they need a really good airtight fit on your
ear, but they come with half a dozen sizes and types of fitting things.

Once you've found the right ones to get that decent fit they sound
amazing, superb clarity, very deep bass, and the sound just appears in
your brain, seeming to bypass your ears.

They don't have an in your face sound, no heavy bass or treble, just
very neutral.

(according to reviews) They also block out background noise a lot
better than most noise cancelling phones, and I can confirm they work
better at getting rid of noise than any ear plugs I've used. I use em
at work now, not plugged into anything.

I'd like them t have a mini audio jack so that I can use them with
portable devices with more ease but they will primarily be plugged
into a proper large jack via a converter.

They'd be used for listening to different styles of music from
classics to loud thumpy modern stuff and a considerable amount of
their time will be spent with pooter games which have very subtle low
volume sounds and loud battles. I want to use them with bass boost
options from the Sony amp I have connected to my pooter without
distortion (my current ones don't distort)

Looking at Bose.co.uk the options appear to be:

£99 Bose Around-Ear Headphones
£275 QuietComfort 3 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones
I had assumed they were available for less online. I used the Bose
website as a source of reference. I'll have a look around online for
reliable retailers and compare prices. There's also a Bose shoppe
about 15 miles away from me which I might go and play with before
making my decision.

£225 QuietComfort 2 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones

The QC3 headphones aren't the 'on ear' type and I find that I get
'sweaty ears' after wearing them for a long time. They are, however,
rechargable with a 20 hour battery life.

The QC2 hearphones are 'around ear' which I prefer but don't appear to
be rechargable, taking a 'AAA' battery but it doesn't mention anywhere
on the site how long that AAA battery lasts.

I think I'd prefer the QC2 size but the QC3 charging option.

Will anyone with experience of the standard Bose around-ear unpowered
headphones and the QuietComfort range place step in and give them
opinion?
