After these news reports about Banks overcharging and customers claiming
back
these charges, I thought I'd give it a go.
2 months ago I wrote to the Halifax, today I got a call offering £ 150
settlement.
(6 years charges apparently totalled £ 221 of charges on my account)
so £ 150 for 10 mins of letter writing.
Nice
They refunded one to me a couple of months back, in full, despite me
openly admitting in my letter to them that it was my fault I'd gone
over into un-authorised overdraft.
I got Halifax to drop a penalty charge for going overdrawn by phoning.
It was my error caused by forgetting a largish annual direct debit,
someone sitting on a cheque for months and being not able to do an
on-line balance check for a few days.

I pointed out this was a first and that I really should have been
offered an up-rated overdraft after having the account for years.
A "give me a good reason why I should keep my account with you" line got
an instant upgrade in overdraft and refund of charges. Not a strategy
that can be used very often though.
