Which Fazer 600?

My dear 600 diversion just died after 11 years of faithful services.
I am tempted by a Fazer 600 second hand but wonder whether I should
aim for a particular model?
(I am based in the UK).

Any reason I should avoid one or the other model?
My mechanic told me to stay away from the latest models as they were
not built in Japan and of lower quality.

Not necessarily lower quality, but they were criticised for losing the 'all
round' quality that was the original Fazer's selling point - particularly
the engine, which didn't have enough mid-range power on the latest
incarnation.

My 2001 (x) is great! Old shape, old motor, 24k on the clock and rides/
runs spot on. Not bad for =A31350.

I'd go along with this, the new ones just don't feel as punchy or as
nice to ride. I prefer the older shape.
