'89 Yamaha Venture Royal

I have an '89 Yamaha Venture Royal with ~40K miles. I haven't driven it
much. Lately I have been having a problem with the warning lights on the
dash that indicates my headlamp is out. Only problem is that the headlamp
works OK. Occasionally I will be driving along and the indicator will go
off for a while. This makes me thing I have a loose wire or connection
somewhere. I have disassembled the upper fairing and removed the dash and
headlight looking for the loose connection or wire. I have traced wires as
per the schematic but cannot find the computer. I did find a box behind the
headlamp that has a circuit board, but the wire colors as per schematic do
not match. I have cleaned all connections with contact cleaner and moved
every wire bundle I can find looking for a broken wire but no luck. Has
anyone heard of this problem before or have any suggestions?
Hmm. The ol' indicator bulb to indicate when some other bulb isn't lit
that lights up even if the indicated bulb isn't *not* lighting up
problem. Dang.

I don't want to sound like a smartass, but since one can easily see
when their headlight isn't lit, is an indicator bulb really needed? I
would simply unplug the inticator bulb and toss it!
