Paging Gyp
Looking through the group's archives on USB wi-fi thingies, and the
Philips one you got from Staples peaked my interest. Can I find it on
Staples' website though? Oh no.
Any pointers?
A telescopic pointer pen.
A laser pointer.
Oops again.
That's a Class 1 *whoosh*, then.
How do they do wi-fi then, and where do I plug them in?
Jeez, MikeH's humour is just lost on some people.
I bought one of these and am very happy with it.
I bought one too.
I'm going to Swindon on Friday.
That's OK - I have a cow-catcher on the front of the car :-)
I do for next week - I've got most of the week off and I'm aiming to
get out on the bike at least one of the days..
URL in reply to Ali, but I'm sure 'centre of Wroughton by lights' will
be good enough for you, being a local 'n' all. Park your bike round the
back by the trestle table & whoever's working the kitchen will keep an
eye on it.
Other than the day where I take it down to Chippenumumumum for it's MOT
and service of course.
Why Chip? Art Deans have still got their (extremely good) Triumph
mechanic & all the special tools from when they were a Triumph dealer,
& Bike Treads are brilliant for MoTs, especially when they get to know
you. Art Deans will MoT it too, but they just take them to Bike Treads
anyway.

It's not very good. Well, I say that - it may not be the device
itself, as my machine was playing up with its previous USB wi--fi
thingy. But now with the Philips one, it only starts up around 50% of
the times I boot the machine - the other 50% I have to unplug it, then
plug it in again.
This is very odd. The only problem I have ever had with Wireless was
trying to get a USB adapter working consistently on a W98 box. Gave up
and went cabled. Otherwise I use a Sony PCMIA adapter on a laptop and a
Belkin USB adaptor on an old Dell desk top with no issues at all ever
(3Com router). I recently set up a wireless connection for someone. Dell
laptop with built in wireless adapter of some kind and a Netgear router.
It was a bit unreliable until I changed the channel number so as not to
clash with his neighbour, but is 100% now.
We actually ended up in Didcot, rather than closer to Wroughton. But I shall
make sure we visit.
FFS, that's just about sums up the reviews for every single USB wi-fi job
on the market, with some people having no problems at all, and the rest
getting drop outs and needing re-installs etc.
I want something very reliable as I don't have wi-fi at home but want
something for my laptop when I'm away in a hotel or something. I can test
Not very practical for the true road warrior but if all you're looking
for is use in hotels and such like then it might be worth looking at a
gaming adapter that plugs into the ethernet port.
Thanks John, but I really want something smaller and lighter. Preferably
able to handle higher speeds and WPA (for when I connect at work - not
that I'll do that much, oh no).
Something like this
whatever I buy by taking the laptop to work, but that's about it.
I suppose that PCMCIA won't be any better anyway.
It seemed such a good idea when I thought about it initially.
