Thicko questions about Windows and stuff
|
First off I confess I have been fiddling about with Windows Update and
when I updated drivers for my Sound Card I ended up with no sound via
the speakers. I then decided to delete the most recent files instead of
reversing the update (ahem!). I did manage to also reverse the update
but in the process have gained a new error message on start up.
This is as follows
RUNDLL
Error Loading cmicnfg.cpl
The specified module could not be found.
|
This is a soundcard related file, so might explain your lack of sound.
|
|
Uninstall driver completely, restart may be a good idea.
Go to website of sound card maker and download proper driver. Install.
I wouldn't trust Windows update with hardware drivers - I've had a
similar problem, also with a soundcard.
|
I have had one system crash since this error appeared but otherwise the
machine runs OK. Any clues as to how to get the file back as I have
rerun Windows Update and used a programme called PC Mighty Max and
neither have solved the problem.
|
A quick web-search doesn't put PC mighty max in a good light. I'd get shut
IIWY.

The second numpty question concerns XP service pack 2. I have not
updated with it because at the time it was launched there was a lot of
feedback about it clashing with existing Firewall and Anti Virus
programmes. I use Norton Internet Security 2006 on my system.
What, if anything, do I need to do in advance or after loading Service
Pack 2 to stop clashes / non operation between XP and Norton?
|
I've never used it. Safest thing would probably be to download the full
SP2 update to your computer[1], disconnect from the internet, uninstall
Norton, install SP2, install Norton.
To be honest, if you know how to reinstall windows from scratch I'd be
tempted to windows-update to SP2 and see what happens.

I'm left with no choice but to upgrade to SP2 given Microsoft have
stopped actively supporting XP1.
|
Download full SP2 from download centre, not from Update. Stop all
unnecessary programs, especially Norton and anti-virus thingies.
Install SP2 and restart.
Pray.

Your patience in dealing with a numpty would be appreciated as would
easy to comprehend non techie answers.

Have you tried using Windows Restore to return the machine to an earlier
state?
