Triumph Daytona 675 - Possible engine failure after only 660miles... advice needed!
|
Hello...
Looking for some advice as to what options I have based on the following...
Three weeks ago I collected the bike off the show room floor with 0 miles on
the clock... I've been following the running-in procedure where the first
600 miles is max 5000 RPM ... there have been odd occasions where I've gone
over the 5000 RPM but nothing more than 8000 RPM. Basically I've been taking
it easy and haven't tried getting the factory cobwebs out.
For the first two weeks all was fine but then last week a rather annoying
'ticking' noise started to come from the engine (similar to the Honda CBR
when the CAM chain tensioner goes). I called the dealership and basically
was reassured that it was nothing to worry about and it would be checked at
the 500mile service.
Bike went in today for it's 500 mile checkup.. was given a clean bill of
health and was told that the 'ticking' noise is normal.. something to do
with the tappets if I remember correctly. Wasn't too happy with the
explanation but if the mechanic said it was normal and there was nothing to
worry about what more can I do.
Anyways I collect the bike after the service is complete... about 5 miles
from the dealership I pull off from a set of traffic lights as I pull off
all is normal.. I reach 6000 RPM and change into second. As I release the
clutch the engine splutters and I loose all power and drive. I pull off to
the side of the road with the engine idling very rough and there seems to be
a miss as well. I waited for approx 15mins and tried to restart the bike,
normally it starts after the second/third turn but only fired after 6/8
turns, once it was started it idled very roughly and it wouldn't rev up past
2000 RPM. So I get onto the dealership.

PB's 675 went bang after a dealer had serviced it. Triumph said the
dealer got the cam timing one tooth out. The dealer said no. Triumph
said sorry, but you did. Dealer said no. I think you may have the same
problem.
|
The dealer doesn't touch the cams at the first service.

Dealership collects me and a very sick bike... back at the workshop they
eliminated an electronic failure therefore the problem must be mechanical
therefore very severe!! They will be calling the factory tomorrow in order
to run further diagnostics.
Now here's my dilemma... The bike is only three weeks old and only done 660
miles.
I'm not happy if they have to open the engine to fix whatever the problem
is; I had a CBR 600 that did over 37K without the engine being opened. I
think of it this way...you have the battery replaced on your watch but after
that it's never water resistant.
What can I do? Demand a brand new replacement bike? Failing that engine? Or
complete refund and get something else.
Should I contact the finance company and complain that I was sold faulty
goods?
Let me know your thoughts on what options I have..

It probably wouldn't hurt to have it on record - I had a similar
problem with an expensive Moben kitchen that refused to stay attached
to the walls - it' was amazing how quickly the whole thing was sorted
out once the finance people realised they weren't going to get paid for
a substandard pile of kack.

Aye, referring to my other post...
I cc'd my finance company in on the letters to my dealer. They wrote
back saying "thanks for keeping us informed" and asked me to let them
know of any future problems.
Technically they own the bike so if there's to be a refund due to me
rejecting it then they'd get the money, not me. Obviously this
doesn't apply if you've used a private loan.
|
You're stuffed if you pay cash for your bikes, like wot I do.
|
Technically no more than I. You still have the same legal rights.
Only the advantage to a finance company or a credit card company is
you have a big boy on your side of the fight.

At least give them a chance to rectify the problem.

When my KTM engine ka-boomed at 600-odd miles they replaced the entire
engine. So I have a rolling-chassis that's done 600+ miles more than the
lump.
|
I was hopping to do at least 40K like my trusty Honda CBR 600.. maybe this
675 was just a bad apple in the cart.
