I seem to have uninstalled Norton in its entirety by mistake - I

I doubt that very much.

There may well be leftover bits floating around my PC, but nothing
that can actually be used.

Which, concerning Norton, is a normal situation.

What's regarded as a reliable AV package for Windows XP?
I'm prepared to pay reasonable money.

AVG - free version, or pay if you want more frequent and reliable
updates and tech support - similar prices to others, but you get 2
yrs instead of 1 yr.

Kaspersky. I find it to be excellent.
I also use AVG free on two other machines, the only problems I have
encountered are a couple of false positives.
