all the jap cruiser-inspired v-twin engines are low-powered for their
capacity, but the Bandit's is relatively modern fuel injected inline 4
- for a comparison, the similarly sized Huyabusa engine makes nearly
twice as much power[1]

Still being a newbie when it comes to techie stuff .. i) why do bike
manufacturers sell litre-class bikes that produce no more horses than a
reasonable 500cc [1] ..? And ii) why do people buy them ?

Midrange. A Bandit 1250 makes around 80 ftlbs torque at less than 4k
rpm. A GSXR1000 makes about 80 ftlbs at 9k rpm. If you want Bandit
midrange with gixxer top-end you have to use things like variable valve
timing/variable length inlets, which would push Bandits & their ilk
well above the 'cheap commuter' market price range.
