I've a Y plate Bandit 600 and like it a lot..
What's the best way to deal with rusty bits, like the pillion foot
rests?

ACF 50 will stop it rusting after you use the angle grinder.

Nah, coat all the surrounding areas liberally with hydrfluoric acid.
