since we're at this sort of thing...
...which bike did you at one point consider buying, then catch
yourself on and bought something completely different instead?
After passing my test I almost bought a Brazillian RD350. Fortunately the
Honda dealer had a pre-reg Dominator which tempted me.
70s Ducati 900ss bought the Guzzi
Smart move.
A mate had one of those and I rode it. It was awful.
Used to break down on a weekly basis too.
A slightly foxed Aprilia RS250 in a breakers with the intention of hill
climbing it. Bought the 510 Husky instead. Just as well really, as Pat
Sefton I ain't.

Not bikes, but cars - I nearly bought the Maserati Merak SS that was
sat next to the Porker I did buy in the showroom. It was one of the
rare times my head won over, but I do regret it.
If you'd ever driven a Merak you'd realise you did the right thing.
Awful. Truly awful. And not even that fast either.
But, but - they're so *pretty*
And don't forget I've got a C3 'vette - awful but pretty cars appeal to
me...

For me, before buying the SZR660, I briefly considered buying an
XV250.
When my black R100/7 did its wossnames, I went out with the vague intention
of getting something like a decentish CX500 or the like. Ended up with a
brand-new VN800-C2.
A what, already?
Jesu Christo.
My g/f has one, very slow, very bouncy. It's rubbish.
I know - what a lucky escape, eh?
I can't help thinking that, had I bought it, my life would have taken
a turn for the worse.
I guess it made my life a little less ordinary.
I always assumed you'd bought that to cheer everyone else up.
At lunch on the ferry, later that day, I remarked to TOG that I considered
it a privilege to be able to purchase such an elegant and stylish
motorcycle. He seemed to find this disconcerting.

You'd be wearing leather chaps and turning tricks in the loos at the
Coleherne
Almost bought an R1150GS, bought a GSXR1000 instead.
When conflict resolution goes the wrong way...

And then some. That would have been a mistake as great as Doc Gonzo
buying that Laverda twin.
In 1983, I went into Moto Vecchia to buy a brand new Morini 500 Sport.
They had a used Guzzi Spada in, and I took it for a spin, and bought
that instead. Probably a wise move, with hindsight. I went everywhere
on that bike, and chopped it in for the later Spada NT. Went
everywhere on that, as well. I have a feeling the Morini would have
been a woefully unreliable money pit.
That's easy. The Harris-Katana I mentioned earlier.
If memory serves I bought a GPz750 instead and trousered the change.
A clanger of biblical proportions.
