Why do bikes have short tire life???
|
I was just wondering recently, why don't tires last longer on
motorcycles? Even a cheap car tire will get 30,000 - 40,000 miles, and

You've gotten some generally good answers here already, but if you
want to dig into some of the specific dynamics that cause fast wear of
moto tires, look up:
1. Camber thrust effect
2. Casing stiffness
3. Load vs. ratio of contact pressure to tire pressure
4. Horsepower per unit of contact pressure
5. Wear stage and cord angle
6. Transmission of traction
7. Transmission of braking forces

a top line tire can go 80,000 miles, even on a big SUV/truck with over
1,000 pounds of weight per tire.

You don't seem to know the first thing about wear vs. performance.
Clue: I use top performance tires on my cars. I've never in my life gotten even
20,000 miles out of a set of tires.
|
Yet motorcycle tires, supporting just two or three hundred pounds
each, not only cost twice as much as car tires, but have lifetimes
ranging from only 5,000 to 15,000 miles. What's the reason? Maybe a
softer rubber formula, perhaps? Maybe all the leaning?

Lots of power going through a very small contact patch.
Next question?
