Evaluating an older bike

I have a line on a 1980 Honda CM400T in nearly
showroom condition and I want to use it for town
which, around here, means short runs on highways
and bridges. Asking price is CDN$1000.

The tires are original with less than 1% wear
(but fossilized so will have to be replaced).

Other than that what should I look for? I believe
the seller is more trustworthy than a total stranger
as he's the service manager at a local bike dealership
where I've been dealing.

Any help appreciated, especially web pages
on this topic. web-search turns up a lot of sites
but nothing very helpful.
Try this out, pretty comprehensive list:
Yeah, thta's an excellent list! Says it all.
