OT: MS Vista

Out tomorrow
don't bother till SP2, 3 or 4 is out
thats all.
I fear you might be right.
It's been working rather nicely on this laptop for a while.
Too fussy tho' don't you think :)
I really like it so far.

If I was having to pay for it myself I wouldn't consider it though.
It's far too pricey to buy just to upgrade an existing system , so I'd just
wait till I needed a new PC and buy one with the appropriate version
installed.

I installed Office 2007 last week, it lasted a very short time before being
taken off and returning to Office 03, way too glitsy and fussy.
I've got this as well , but not really had a chance to play yet
Conversely, I think Office 2007 is much more efficient to use.
Perhaps I did'nt give it a fair chance :) When time permits I'll give it
another shot, as I guess we WILL be upgrading to it at some point.
One of the many dichotomies that one can split people into is
reactionary and revolutionary. Reactionary types generally don't like
change, so their first response to anything new is often negative.
Revolutionary types are the opposite. This is usually an emotional
response before one has rationally had time to consider the thing on
its merits. I'm generally revolutionary in outlook - you may be
I'll add it to my Notes.

reactionary.
I'm reactionary for about 15 minutes before turning almost rabidly
revolutionary. Every single time. You'd think I'd have learned by now...
Weird. That's me to a tee.
If our corporate upgrade policy remains constant, I'll let you know my
opinion sometime after the London Olympics.
At home, I'm messing around with IE7 and tabbed browsing. At work, they
can't even block pop-ups.
Have you tried Slimbrowser?

It will give you the tabbed browsing plus useful extras. It is based on an
IE engine (1). I have been using it for about 18 months and like it.

(1) Thus allowing me to keep IE7 off my systems.
Our client report engine has just been upgraded from access 97.

This of course would be a "seamless" upgrade, so no testing was
carried out.

Which explains why we've had two people working full time implementing
"fixes" for the last three months.
Never mind, the company won't exist in another two months anyway,
from what I read in the Financial pages.
What The Pru, or Microsoft?
The former, at a guess.

There have been suggestions of sending pictures of arses and elbows
upstairs, as a training aid.
I do hope you have an exit strategy, or a cast-iron pension!
Give me a chance - we found out about it from the BBC news website the
same time as everyone else - about ten minutes after the "all staff"
email telling us what a wonderful year we've just had.

Exit strategy? Wouldn't one need some kind of marketable skill for one
of those?
Experienced GoldWing Mechanic. Sorted!

Pension *should* be okay - it's fully funded according to the latest
blurb received, and managed elsewhere. Trouble is, I've only accrued
23/38ths of my total.
Plus it's almost certainly vested with some dodgy insewerants
company...
I sense "upgrade rage"...
Before giving up, did you notice if you in Office 07 can save your
preferences in Word, to avoid having to tick off every option again
after having Windows/Office reinstalled?
Looks like a chose the perfect time to change OS then :)
Mac converts are the "I've quit smoking" preaching Nazis of the computing
world...
Well, after this thing spat its dummy, delted all e-mail and reset
itself to its native state, I don't think I'll be getting the tattoo's
just yet.

At least all the files and other stuff was still on the hard drive. :/
A Mac crashed???!!! Doesn't happen, sorry.
It didn't crash per se, just spat its dummy out and threw all the
settings and e-mail away!
The settings sounds like the preferences file which was usually a bit flaky
in OS9 and early OSX releases but I haven't known of it to be an issue
lately. With the e-mail disappearing too that starts to point in the
direction of your home folder. What version are you running? I presume
10.4, is it 10.4.8 by any chance?
Considering there's a lot of knowledgeable IT people in here I'm
suprised no ones mentioned the content crippling of Vista.
And it's already been cracked..

Both worksafe, unless you work for Microsoft.

"Vista's content protection mechanism only allows protected content to
be sent over interfaces that also have content-protection facilities
built in. Currently the most common high-end audio output interface is
S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format). Most newer audio
tell me/us more please?
Alex Ionescu claims to have cracked it.

cards, for example, feature TOSlink digital optical output for
high-quality sound reproduction, and even the latest crop of
motherboards with integrated audio provide at least coax (and often
optical) digital output. Since S/PDIF doesn't provide any content
protection, Vista requires that it be disabled when playing protected
content [Note E]. In other words if you've sunk a pile of money into a
high-end audio setup fed from an S/PDIF digital output, you won't be
able to use it with protected content."

Of course, this is 'just wot I saw on the web, therefore it MUST be
true!'. I'm happy with XP and will be for a long time to come, I
think.
Wait until Microsoft send the "cripple XP" updates out, forcing people
to upgrade. Oh, I forgot, the "cripple XP" update was SP2, wasn't it?
At over £200 for a home edition there's NO chance. That and the
'premium content' fiasco it can wait.
I use rdp to get on from elsewhere, so if I want media support as well
I'm looking at the Business Premium edition for something like 250 quid.

Bollocks to that, unless I'm buying a new PC at the same time.
