Steering lock key - I don't have the original?
|
I never did have the steering lock key to my Honda CB750F1 (1976). I am
with a replacement ignition key, but interestingly they say they have
never seen a lock like the one on my bike. (photo here
Does anyone know who might be able to help me?
|
The place to ask is Keys Galore, in London (96 Gloucester Avenue, NW1
0207 586 9741)
Now, what you've got there is a standard Neiman steering lock, as
fitted to virtually all Hondas (and some other bikes) before they
started incorporating the steering locks in the ignition switch. If you
carefully drift out that pop-riveted washer with Neiman stamped on it,
the whole lock will come out in your hands.
|
Hmmm, I've got the pop rivet and washer out, but the lock's still in
there. It's not siezed as it does move in and out very slightly. Is it
possible that it's in the locked position and that someone has just
sheared it off? I guess drilling it out is the only option.
|
Dismantle the front end until you get the steering head tube thingy out,
then push the lock out from the inside.
Reassembly is the reverse of the above.
|
Not sure that I'd be able to push the old one out from the inside if it
was locked?
Dave Silver has the locks in stock so I'll have a spare if I can get
away without butchering the old one out.
And yes I know it won't protect the bike much more than a lump of
cheese in there, but at least it would hold someone up another second
or two.

Other than the kindly suggested angle grider of course.
|
IIRC, once it's out, any locksmith can cut a key from a Neiman blank.
To replace the lock, shove it in the hole, and knock back in the pop
rivet and washer (might be a good idea to use some stud & bearing fit
on the rivet).
Alternatively, scan Ebay for a steering lock & key. Actually, I think
|
Don't panic - picking these locks requires a comfy stool, steady flow of
cups of coffee and an hour or 2 uninterrupted concentration.
|
I've got one myself, lurking in a box somewhere in the garage.
|
Ooh, sell me it if you find it? Save me a lot of pratting around.
|
Might take weeks to locate it, if it exists anyway, and can't really go
hunting before the weekend. As you've got to extract the lock anyway,
do that first and see if you can get a key cut for it.
|
That could still leave a problem - if I remember correctly you can't remove
the old lock without the key.
