Gear Shift Lever Adjustment

I am new to biking, but loving it!

I want to "raise" the gear shift lever on my Varadero XL125 as I
struggle to get my toe under it, but cannot see how to do it. A bit of
And some shafts have a circular groove round them where the fixing bolt
goes - with these you can't just loosen the bolt, you have to take it right
out. Don't ask, etc.
Indeed, The splines are usually fairly coarse and the next position round
is usually too high. If there isn't a link rod (see Eiron's post) then
you'll have to either get used to it or wear boots with a thinner sole.

basic advice would be appreciated.
Does it have a rod linking the pedal bit to the actuator bit?
If so check the locknuts on the rod. If one has a reverse thread,
loosen both, turn the rod to shorten it, retighten the nuts.
If both ends have normal threads, loosen the nuts, take off the
short actuating arm, turn it a few times, refit and retighten.
Try to get the arm at a right angle to the rod.
