paging the laptopisti

My new Dell inspiron 6400 ( Lovely, thanks Mr. H) has today decided that
it won't connect to the wireless network, claiming that the connection
is unavailable. Opening the Dell Wireless Wlan Utility shows the network
is 'there' but there is a big red X through a picture of the router. Any
clues?
Yes - there is currently a plague, nay, a pandemic, of WiFi pixies stealing
connections - I have an infestation at my house right now.

Also a common hiding place for the infestation is often a lava lamp.
OS?
WEP/WAP enabled?
DCHP client running on laptop?
DCHP server running on router?
same netmask?
Little switch on laptop in "on" position ?

I bit more info would be more than helpful.
you're right, of course, I was panicking a bit. however the problem has
been resolved by moving my son's lava lamp which was blocking the signal!
