On never getting out of 2nd gear...



I read a ton of reviews and road tests being the gear hound/poseur/
whatev' that I am. I can't buy it all, but I can look.

In the following road test of my ex-bike - Honda Aero 750, the writer
is musing over how much fun the smaller bikes are because they "give
you a more basic and elemental riding experience". He goes on to say,
"With the big bikes, you shift into second at 15 or 20 miles per hour,
and you can ride around in suburban traffic all day in second because
there is enough torque and power to ride between 15 and 50 mph."

Sure, my VTX1800 can do 50 in 2nd, but with louder pipes and not
wanting to see mileage drop to 20mpg, I opt to be in at least 3rd and
usually 4th at 50mph.

Do folks with larger displacement bikes really wind out 2nd gear to
50mph around town?

Wow! A real live Rambler...if I remember correctly.
Possibly even a Nash Rambler?
Could be, could be. I've seen an actual "Survivor" Nash Ambassador once, it was
a daily driver.

I don't often.
You're talking 5000 rpm with my HD Evo. I might hit that with the hammer
fully down, but certainly not as a general practice.

Consider the following table...

Depends. Do you have wide boulevards with three lanes in each direction and a
grassy median strip and no cops?

If so, you might get up to a thunderous 70 mph between stoplights...
