Honda CBX 750F - starter motor info needed
|
The starter motor on my elderly CBX 750 has given up the ghost.
A new Honda replacement in knocking on for 200 quid, so I need to look
for alternatives (probably at breakers etc).
Would starter motors from any other Hondas fit? CBX 550? CB750?
|
Unlikely in both cases, would be my guess (and I'm afraid it is a
guess). The CBX550 was a slightly earlier model, and the re-launched
CB750 (not to be confused with the 70s bikes) was a bit later.
|
The CB750 used the same engine, though.
|
However, when you say "given up the ghost", what do you actually mean?
Starter motors are amendable to repair, you know.
|
Thanks for the suggestions so far - Yes - repair is one option. The
starter only gives a slight buzzing noise when pressing the button.
The battery is fully charged, and only 4 months old.

|
Spot on, the only time I have ever had a start motor beyond repair is
when the starter
clutch has seized and the engine then turns the starter once it
running - typical symptoms
are opening the starter motor and the insides come out in a coarse
brown dust!
If it's brushes they can be DIY replaced, if its windings then they
can be re-wound -
check out the yellow pages for alternator and starter motor repairs.
Are you sure it's definately the starter, have you tried applying
power directly to the starter
itself bypassing the solenoid?
|
Yes - it's definitely the starter that's knackered. have done the
direct power thingy
|
You have checked the engine earthing, yes?
|
|
As WUN says - a poor earth return to the battery can give *exactly*
your symptoms.
But it seems you haven't even removed the thing from the bike yet, and
you've already asked Honda how much a new one is.
I bet you a quid the starter motor is fine. They almost *never* wear
out on bikes.
|
Thanks for the suggestions everyone - problem is now sorted. The
original 20+ yr old starter, with knackered brushes and worn out
commutator has now been replaced with one from a mid 90s CB750.
Friendly local mechanic sourced the replacement and did the swap, only
charging =A320 for labour. The starter was =A375 from local breaker.
Again, thanks for the input.

|
The one on my GPz550 was worn out. Mind, that whole bike was just a
lesson in why you should never buy a bike from a breaker.
|
|
Have found an Australian website that's dedicated to the CBX 750,
where some posts suggest that starters from either a Kawa Z650 or Z750
are useable, or possibly a 90s CB750.
Still looking, so if anyone has more info, I'd welcome the input.

Any ideas?

Try your friendly local motor factors.
Depending on what the problem is, they may be able to get it
reconditioned at quite a reasonable price.
