Clymer, Haynes or...the original
|
I'm looking for a good service manual for my Dyna. I've been using both
books for years now. The Haynes book I used for my Ironheads with helped
me on a top end revision. With the Clymer I rebuild the four speed of my
EVO (many moons ago). Worked great.
But some prefer to use the original Harley-Davidson manual. Before
buying anything, does anyone know what the main differences are?
|
The main difference is accuracy. The after market either has to make up the
information or get it from the manufacturer. By the time they get done
reproducing it there is always omissions and mistakes. You might as well get
your info where they get their's, the factory manuals are hard to beat.
|
OK, that makes sense...accuracy...
Thanks Roger.

I keep the HD one and the Clymer around, and I've found them both to be
useful. If you can only get one, I'd get the original HD one. There
have been a couple of times that the Clymer had better diagrams and
pictures so I was glad I had it. I'm a pretty new HD owner so I think I
need it spelled out for me a bit more than someone who's been wrenching
on them for years.
I've never used the Haynes for HD, but I have one for my car and it's
been not bad.
|
I only know Clymer and Haynes, therefore my question. I've managed to do
some wrenching with both of them. Never seen a Harley manual. Thanks for
the comparison.

(sigh)
One is written by the people that made the product you own.
The others are not.
The factory, and the MECHANICS that have been working on them since
day one, always refer to the OEM factory manual, not silly reproductions
made in ninth world countries that attempt to get the language straight
|
I didn't pay attention to the ones I gazed through at Pep Boys.

and pictures right.
I don't care which one YOU use or understand.
So why are you asking others, which book is better?
|
Bummer.
For the older bikes I had ('45 Knuck, '65 XLCH, '74 Shovle) I bought
them online...albiet they were reproductions of the OEM ones, but
identical, none the less.
But, that's neither here nor there.
|
Cost?
Clarification?
IMHO, there simply can not be anything better than the original.
|
Well, that is certainly an opinion. :)
And I have to admit that I never heard any other versions by anybody
else, esepecially by those that are claimed to have written it.
|
OK, an easy one then: "All Along The Watchtower" performed by Hendrix
WAS better than the original.
BUT...I'll go for the 'real thang' this time. See my reply to Snarl.
Thnx Pan.

Beg to differ..... I bought a Clymer manual for the '86 FXR before finding
out the OEM manual was still available. Having both for that year isn't such
a bad thing as the older manuals aren't as comprehensive nor are they
illustrated as well as the Clymer. That said, if I was only gonna have one
it'd be the factory manual.
|
Then what yer saying is, you agree with me?
I can live wit dat. :)
