Looking at a 1200 H-D sportster.
11K miles with a few aftermarket add ons.

This will be my first real bike if I can swing the deal.
please provide pros and cons of this bike and what do I need to ask about or
Price? Less than $2-3k and it's a potential steal. More than that... And
it's... Well... Over priced for what you are getting. All depends on what
you want and how well it was really maintained...

All IMHO only of course.

I recently purchased a 2003 1200s In my garage are a couple of Ducatis', an
old one and a newer one both sports models, and an 80s' BMW twin
In comparision I find the sporty to handle well, have acceptable ground
clearance though I'd like more and adequate power, glad I settled on a 1200
and not the 883R I was contemplating.
The vibration is not the issue I expected however I thought she'd be more
comfortable, an aftermarket seat will eventully follow.
In short fun to ride, cheap to buy and cheap to run.and in my view the "S"
model is one of the more attractive bikes ever made by anyone (not to fussed
on the sporster customs )
I'm happy

nothing "girly" about a 1200 H-D
sissy bike, sissy bike you still sit on yours and make vroooom vrro0oomm
sounds?

look for.
Pros
At 11,000 mi it's hardly broke in.
If the price is right.
Stock it is a good short haul bike.
IMHO it is one of the better looking designs HD ever made.
The most important pro is...Is it what you want? Have you ridden it?
If it is then the cons can be handled.

This July I picked up a 1996 Sportster 1200S with just over 9,000 mi.
It now has about 17,000. A Sportster is what I wanted and I waited
until the right deal came around. It came with two seats, the stock
was the more comfortable for me but this spring I see a Vintage wide
Mustang seat coming. I also want to put on a little taller bars, a
quick change luggage rack and possibly forward controls.

I don't mind the vibrations as I am not a handlebar grabber. I rest
my hands on them and push against them under most riding conditions.

Not sure what the next scoot will be. I am leaning toward an FXD. I
think I will keep the Sporty and may even turn it into an old school
style chopper eventually, who knows.

Sportster is a great bike. Fastest, quickest, best
handeling machine harley makes. Before us RUB's got
Wow. V-ROD production must have ceased? :)
you think a V-ROD is faster than a 1200 sporty ?
Let's take this word by word...

Fastest - Quite possibly. All depends on the modifications to each bike,
but yes, I think so. Fastest indicates top speed, not acceleration.

Quickest - Again, quite possibly. Modifications not considered, the HP #'s
alone are an indication to me unless I'm remembering the wrong numbers...

Best handling - I believe the V-ROD is the best handling HD made except for
the Buell line.

I do, I always beat my nephew on his 1200S which is is mod'd with a few
extra performance items, air, exhaust, cams.
Try changing bikes next time ;)

involved, the Sporty was the choice of the 1%'ers.
The ignorant ones claim it's a girley bike. That's
like saying the Mustang is a girley car.
For one person, it's perfect. You can ride all day
and carry luggage too. Better gas mileage and more
power than a BT.
If you plan on riding two up, you'll find it a
little small, though.
If I had money and garage space I'd have a Sporty, too.
