Bike transport, Sydney to Perth ?

I am looking at potentially selling by bike to a fellow in Perth, and
need to find a low cost way of shipping it there from Sydney.

I have called a couple of the players (Bikes-Only, Allwest M/C
Carriers), and they have quoted around the $1000 to $1150, which is a
bit too rich.

Can anyone suggest a lower cost method / organisation ?
Or crate it yourself. I have access to free crates - most bike shops
will give them away just to get rid of them. Harley shops are often
the best for giveaways. Ring around.

Crate it and as Zeebee says the freight cost should come down.

Ring around the smaller freight companies who send stuff from Sydney
to Perth and find someone who will use the crate as a filler - sent
anytime they have a spare space the size of the crate for a lesser
price.

Report back because I'm interested in doing the same from Melb to
Perth next year for my bike and my wife's. We'll ride back after a few
Reds around the Margaret River area.
Backloading from Perth is cheap and timely due to lots of space and a
desperation to fill it. Backloading from the East Coast to Perth is slow and
expensive.

Theo
I'm still trying to figure out how it can cost $12 to have a parcel
delivered from Inglewood to Subiaco (about 6 kms) when I can get the same
parcel picked up from my office and delivered the next day in any suburb of
Sydney for $8.
Yeah, appreciate that, We'll probably ride home.

I assume by "backload" you mean the half empty trucks which are
invariably on the Perth to Melb/Sydney run?

Understand that freighting bikes to Perth from any Eastern state will
always be more expensive than Perth to any Eastern state.

In spite of that we will probably ride home to Melbourne.

As for freighting them to Perth, we'll allow a couple of weeks.
Ah, OK.
