Bike-to-bike comm
|
Greetings, all y'all. My black Amex is on the bar and I'm buying a
round for the house -- doubles, even. And while you're drinking, I

Ok, I'll take that double thank you very much

have some questions. I'm looking to get an intercom system and I'd
like to hear your experience and opinions...
I usually ride solo and would like to be able to do bike-to-bike
communication during group rides, like when I'm tailgunning and want
to talk to the leader. To complicate matters, I sometimes ride with
my daughter on the back and I want to be able to talk to her without
having to yell. And then to *really* complicate matters, there will
be occasions when I'm riding with my daughter on the back and my wife
will be with us on her own bike and I'd like us all to be able to talk
to each other.
So my first question is: what system is recommended? I've been
looking at Autocomm and I think that's what I'll probably go with, but
I'm open to other opinions.
Secondly, the Autocomm system doesn't come with the radio unit, so I'm
looking for recommendations for that.
|
I had an Autocom unit, used it for several years on 2 bikes. Worked
excellent though using the FRS radios for bike-to-bike requires fine squelch
tuning on both bikes for success unless you buy a separate PTT switch.
Otherwise, very well made, excellent sound quality, recommended. Good luck.

You didn't mention what you ride and what the folks you ride with are
riding. All the Ultra Classic guys have CBs. So if yer riding with
bunches of Harley riders, you might look for a CB that'll interface with
Autocom and allow for VOX operation. Of course, if you ride with others,
you need to see what radios they're runnin, or get together and decide what
to use. FRS/GMRS are real popular outside of the Harley world.
Then you have to decide where to mount it. If you're on something that
won't allow an installation of a radio, autocom offers battery operated
versions and a hip pouch that'll hold yer radio and autocom. If you have
saddlebags, tourpak, etc, you might be able to mount everything onboard,
provide plug-in points for rider and passenger, take power from the bike,
and have an external antenna.

Have at it, boys (and girls)!
|
Buy an Ultra Classic, that'll solve all those problems (except you may
have to buy another for your wife, and another for the group leader).
Other than that, I'll just sit here and drink some woodford's. Have some
o' mine
