I need some info on servicing the Mille.

What grade of oil? , any idea on what plugs 'should' be in in case prev
owners have played? anything else I should check? I already reckon I need
to check the r/h disc pads on the front as I'm front brake heavy yet. What
about rear diff, how can I check play etc , what oil, level etc?
The thing to understand is that, like BMWs but unlike any other bike, Guzzis
don't have their gearbox in the sump. It's separate, so the engine runs on
unlike Hardly any other bikes would have been more correct.
Unlike any other modern bike, I should have said.

a decent mineral 20/50, and the gearbox has perfectly acceptable non-vintage
EP90. Change intervals are longer than is typical for the period because of
this. It's been the case for Guzzi v-twins since the early '70s, and if
it's substantially different for the thoroughly modern Mille, I'll eat my
shiny black fibreglass titfer.

Oil: I use Millers 20/50 fully synth or Valvoline Racing 20/50. Change at 2k
miles in Summer, 3k in Winter. New cartridge filter every 2 oil changes.
Plugs: I use NGK B9EV (I use the platinum type but my engine/carbs are
pretty non-standard and it does foul normal plugs quickly)
Gearbox & Bevel oil: I use Valvoline 75/85 fully synth. (Always use
recommended special oil additive in bevel box. See manual.). Change every
20-30k depending on how much of an animal you are.
Fork oil: I use ATF.
I use only Brembo pads, and if you haven't done it already, replace the
brake fluid too.
Balance carbs every month or 1k miles (really!): also see
Most of all, use the correct tappet clearances. A quiet Guzzi is a Guzzi
waiting to burn out an exhaust valve. Noisy valvegear *can* be a good thing
indeed.
You really need to get a factory manual. They are pretty cheap and unlike
some Jap and Haynes manuals, do actually provide you with accurate info.
I found the Moto Guzzi original/factory manual to be rather good.Around
£30 iirc.
Many of the specs are available here, may not have the Mille (in
italian, but it is pretty easy to see what the gearbox level is etc):
Oil is 20/50. Plugs.... oh, web-search.

Pads - the lin ked system, IIRC, operates the left-hand front, not the
right, so check that one.

There shouldn't be any play in rear diff.

Oil level - on dipstick, duh.
I meant level in diff? I must admit I haven't checked for a dipstick in
there if thats where you mean.

Usually level is up to the edge of the filler hole.
As Auvache says, there's the level hole. Fill it up to the top of that -
ie: until is just starts dribbling out.


Pads I thought the front brake lever oprerates teh r/h front disk and teh
foot linked system the lefthand. As I'm hand happy it would be the r/h
that would wear quicker.
Erm.. OK, it's been a while, so my memory may be at fault, but I thought
the footbrake operated the left-hand caliper. You can easily check by
following the brake hose down from the hand lever.


Whilst cleaning the wheel there seems to be about
1/2 inch if that 'play' if you rock the wheel where you can feel the diff
going front one face to the other
Rotational play? Nothing to worry about.
