Ride DC->Maine, Recommendations?

Planning a ride from DC to Lubec, Maine (as far east as one can go) in a
couple of weeks. I'm thinking about breaking the ride up into three days'
worth of riding so as to take it slowly and enjoy it.
Any recommendations about (a) A route to take and (b) Two places where it
would be nice to stop overnight and which are sanely spaced along the
route?

20 into Mass
North on 7 to 2A over the Mohawk Trail
Either Rt 2 out all the way out to near Boston and I-95 or 5N out of
Greenfield into VT, followed by the back roads of your choice. I
recommend an ice-cream stop in Keene.
