Royal Enfield

Hello! I am thinking of buying a Royal Enfield Bullet Military.

My reasoning is thus: I have owned several Triumph (cars), and several
early '70's Honda bikes. I am well aware of how to maintain a high
maintenance vehicle, including engine rebuilds, tranny rebuilds, and
more. Since I am used to the constant tinkering, maintenance, and
customization of classic bikes and British cars, why not buy a bike
that requires such? I actually enjoy a weekend rebuilding old side-
draft carburetors.

I have read mixed reviews however, so let me start off with this:

1) If you have owned a Royal Enfield I would like to hear about your
experience.
2) If you hate doing work on a bike and expect it to be mainenance
free, don't bother replying.

Therefore, if you have a Royal Enfield and are well aware of
maintaining it please let me know of your experience, good or bad.

If you just hate Royal Enfield's because you love
please don't bother replying.
I'm not a big fan of drum front brakes. I remember a few
nasty experiences trying to stop in a hurry back when they
were a standard.

To my mind, slow, old fashioned, and/or high maintenance
even if true wouldn't necessarily be showstoppers, but
inadequate brakes sure could be.
