ot: London borough of Newham

anyone got any experience of working (as a contractor) for Newham
Council?

Query for Someone Other than me.
Several TG members worked for them through TG in 1999, and they seemed
a reasonable crowd to work for then - anything specific you want to
know, and I'll ask around?
this is a non-IT Management role - I really just wanted an idea of
what they were like to work for specifically for contractors. The
person involved has loads of experience of working for local
authorities, but always as an employee.
oh, and a secondary, Paul Corfield-style question:
You rang?

What's the best route from Enfield Town to Stratford? (optimised for
speed - I'm aware that the "easy" option is all the way into Liverpool
St. and then 3 stops out on the central line)
This is one way to do it but much more expensive as it includes Zone 1.
Expense isn't really an issue (see below)

Nationrail reckons to get the train to Hackney Downs, then walk to
Hackney Central and get the train to Stratford from there.
This is another but pretty undesirable as the change in Hackney is a tad
convoluted and I'd certainly not wish to do it in bad weather or in the
dark.
that's what I thought - thanks for confirming it.

However, my patented "actually looking at the London Connections map
and relevant timetables" method suggests:

Get the train to Seven Sisters, one stop on the tube to Tottenham Hale
and then one stop on the train to Stratford. Have I missed something
obvious (other than the fact that after 8:30 or so the trains only run
every 30 minutes on the last leg of this journey)
Yes this is a relatively new service which heads down to Stratford from
Bishops Stortford / Stansted Airport.
I thought it might be new-ish, as I hadn't noticed it before.

There are two options - as you describe but that leaves you with the
vagaries of the Victoria Line to contend with despite going against the
peak flow. I would hate to be in a rush to get the train at Tottenham
Hale and having to fight against the flood of commuters exiting the main
line platform that I was trying to reach. It sounds silly but Tottenham
Hale is very busy in the peaks and I doubt one person could battle
against several hundred coming in the other direction - miss your train
and it's 30 mins wait.
that's a very good point, and one I hadn't previously considered.

The second option but possibly even less convenient is to head a little
east at the Enfield end to Enfield Lock and board the direct train
there. Regrettably the service does not stop at Ponders End in the peaks
which I suspect might be more convenient. The alternative is to board at
[snip]
Neither Enfield Lock or Ponders End are in the slightest convenient -
we now live a few hundred meters due south of Enfield Town, so only
really Enfield Town or - at a push - Enfield Chase stations are
convenient.

Ponders End and change at Tottenham Hale - the timetable has a 15 min
gap between trains which is a decent margin but almost doubles the time
spent on trains compared to just boarding / alighting at Enfield Lock.
As I am no longer quite sure where you are residing I cannot make any
assumptions about the availability of local connections to stations and
how easy / hard they'd be.

Worth bearing in mind that going via Liverpool St means a Z12345 ticket.
(£39.80) All prices for a 7 day ticket.
[snip cheaper options]
Well, to be honest (and you know how much I dislike mentioning fiscal
issues), cost is not an issue. This is for Angie, and she already buys
a =A3152.90 monthly Z12345 ticket - if she were to get this particular
job it would mean >100% pay increase[1] over what she's on at the
moment, so the main consideration is convenience.

Enfield Town via Hackney to Stratford is Z345 - £19.40
Enfield Town via 7 Sisters / T Hale to Stratford is Z345 - £19.40
Enfield Lock via T Hale to Stratford is Z3456 - £23.30
Ponders End via T Hale to Stratford is Z345 - £19.40

I am, of course, assuming regular M-F travel here and have assumed a
Travelcard Season would be used. Oyster Pre-Pay is valid from Tottenham
Hale to Stratford on the Overground so if the person in question was
more flexible in their travel options using the bus to Tottenham Hale
[snip]

and then the train would lower their daily costs to £4 - £1 per bus trip
and then £1 per train ride assuming Oyster pre-pay values.

Alternatively the Travelcard season ticket would fall under this
scenario to just a Zone 34 ticket covering Tottenham Hale - Stratford.
Such a ticket still gives access to all bus services in London. This
would be £15 for a 7 day ticket but of course travel times would be much
longer and less predictable - I assuming use of the 192 bus.
Busses are not an option, I'm afraid. Thanks for all the info in any
case.

[1] she'd actually be getting paid more than I do right now!
What? Your household will be bathing in asses milk at this rate.
heh. Basically, she's considerably underpaid at the moment[1]. #1 step-
kid wil l be leaving school in June, and hopefully getting some sort
of proper paid employment and also further contributing the the
coffers, mind.

[1] how much do you think a Programme Manager with >12 years PM
experience, a staff of 8 direct-report PMs, Prince2 Certified
Practitioner (3 years qualified), APMP qualified, responsible for
rolling out Prince2 methodology for ~100 project staff in their org,
should get paid in central London[2]

[2] if you know what you're talking about, your guess will be much
higher than what she currently gets paid.
