ot: (sort of) Hook
Anyone know anything about Hook, in Hampshire? I know nothing about it
other than the fact it's right beside J5 of the M3, and that my sister
and her family are moving there from NI in August. I'll probably pop
down fairly regularly, and was wondering if there are any 1/2 decent
biking roads between there and Herts?
Between you and there, there's just the M25 and M3.
From Hook itself, though, there are plenty of good biking roads, not least
the infamous "southern loop". The Basingstoke to Alton road starts just a
couple of miles away too
As others have said, in the vicinity but to the south and west are the
nicest roads. So you've got a some nice riding pretty much on your (well
So, where's my phone call, you waster ;-)
You're going to Sedan, right?
There's no show without Punch.

her) doorstep but not actually en route.
Nice area, very expensive houses. Full of GATSOs and Plod - and Hampshire
hmm. Not compared to where I live, though expensive enough, obviously.
Plod are *very* tough on speeding.
There's a cop college not far from there too.
There is indeed, my husband has lectured there. Bramshill.
Years ago most of the Bramshill mob regularly used to be 'locked up' after
hours in the Coach and Horses in Rotherwick . . . .
Just off the B3011 by Hazeley, iirc.
Yep.
guess where these were taken?
By St Neots school playing field?
Heh. Not in my part of 'aaaaampshire, they're not!
The A339 used to be good, but is south of Hook, so not really relevant.
It also is a favourite with bikes which means loads of people have
stuffed it and the police presence is high.
It's only 15 miles long though, so it's easy to do a recon trip
it's in completely the wrong place, but thanks anyway.
There is (was anyway) a big bike meet that happens at Hook. I can't
remember any of the details mind..
The Lord Derby pub at Odiham - turn left at the M3 coming from London instead
of right, and it's at the first roundabout.
The A33 down to Basingstoke also _used_ to be okay - but then they made
it a 50 and it's always full of traffic.
Does anyone take 50 limits seriously?
I do but I'm not sure why. Probably it's just psychological.
Nasty coppers with their radarses, vascars and lazermification devices,
trying to trap bikers.
No. It's a NSL without the courage of its convictions. The only reason
it's a 50 is because the local authorities get more wedge per mile from the
government if it's restricted.
I certainly don't.
TBH, I don't bother with speed limits at all, and just ride or drive
at whatever speed I think is appropriate.
Dunno about the B3349 or B3011.
Again, not stunningly great; hint: Enfield is nowhere near Reading.
I'm looking for info on roads such as:
A30
A30 until you get out of Blackwater (heading west (ish)) is just a
boring slog. There are some nice stretches (but all too brief really)
between there and Hook with only Hartley Wintney (2 miles from me) to
slow down for.
hmm.
Any idea what Hook's like as a place to live? It's a bit late as
they've already bought a place, but I'm curious.
Mixed - couple of modern (i.e. 80s/90s I guess) housing developments but
with a lot of more mature housing too. It's a small place and not joined
up to any other town IYSWIM - surrounded by green really well connected
for motorways plus railway into Waterloo (55 mins appx).
Gangs of teenagers hanging around and causing the usual agro near the
sports centre apprently. Which suprised me since it seems quiet to me
but I'm only there when the kids are at school I suppose.
A3095
A330
A4094
etc.
So basically, er, dunno.
It's also means going near Wokingham and therefore near Judge (though
granted travelling on the M3 would negate this).
Ash will probably know better, but nothing outstanding. There's a bit
around Alton, and back towards Guildford, and some fast blatts further
towards the M25 between Ottershaw/ Chobham/ Brookwood/ Pirbright/
Deepcut. Around Sandhurst, it's a bit built up, or the roads boring.
Couple of reasonable roads around nine mile ride and around Wokingham.
Gimme a shout when you're around. Or you could always hook up with
Judge .. ;-)
I used to live relatively close to there (in Fleet). There are some
OK roads, but ime they were often clogged in traffic, and it was only
ever a mile or two between each village.
