Paging Cab and other Froggies
|
I bought a couple of French bike mags on my hols last week, and one said
that you are no longer allowed to pay cash in any transaction over 3000
euros for a bike (or car, or other items, I think). It has to be done
through a bank.
This is supposed to be some sort of money-laundering or anti-whatever
precaution.
Sounds bizarre. Is this true? The article implied that it also applied
to private sales.

I've heard it from a colleague of mine when he went to buy a s/h cage
recently, but I couldn't give you more info than that. So I suppose it
could be true. What Mag did you read it in?

Moto Journal. The "Hors Serie" used buyers' special.

When I purchased the WR250 last year from a dealer he was quite happy to
let me take it away after giving him a cheque. French law on bouncing
cheques is much stricter than here. Well below the 3000 euros limit
anyway. Knowing the French, there will be a special form that has to be
completed to confirm the transaction complies with the rule (at least at
face value) before you can register the vehicle. Getting the Yamaha
registered was an education in frog bureaucracy. For one thing, I had to
get a chit from EDF to prove a current address. The form to be filled in
was more like a first registration application than just a change of
owner. If it wasn't for our super helpful insurance agent (who arranged
the bike cover) I would never have coped. Once we got to the correct
office in Limoges however I was amazed that all my paperwork was in
order and I had my new 'carte gris' there and then.

(I suppose it's only a matter of time before our bunch of political
jokers pick up the idea....)

To be honest, in this country you cant really pay much more than a few
grand in cash for a car or bike from a dealer now. All about money
laundering etc. Of course, it wont stop gangsters buying nearly new
cars for cash etc....

I withdrew £9000 the other day & i have never had so many questions
regarding things that arent even connected to anything i could discern.
On the other hand, if you take that much from a business account, they
dont give a toss.
