[OT] PC Equipment recommendation.
I've just bought this smart, little KVM so I can use my Linux box and
Windows PC with the same keyboard, mouse and monitor.
You could vnc in both directions.
Very nice, small and unobtrusive.
You may have to amend your kernel parameters at boot time if the mouse
doesn't like being switched out. I use "psmouse.proto=bare" to get
around the problem on Fedora 7.
I plugged in, turned on and it all worked fine. Thanks for the pointer
though.
I think you'll find the pointer is provided by the operating system.
I prefer the soft solution
rdesktop from Linux to Windows
vnc from Windows to Linux
It's an odd one because it was fine in Fedora 3 but needed the
work-around in later editions.
Which one? F1DF102Puk, F1DF102Uuk, F1DG102Puk, F1DG102Uuk, F1DG102Duk or
F1DG102Wuk?
And why does it need this switch thing? It just takes up valuable coffee
mug/ash-tray space on ones desktop.
My KVM switches between systems with a couple of taps on the keyboard
(ctrl-ctrl, IIRC, it is months since I fired up the other system), and
lives wholly out of sight in amongst the great pile of dusty and tangled
wiring behind the desk.
I got the F1DF102Puk, because I've got no need for a USB version nor the
speaker support. All I do is click on the clicker and it swaps between
systems. The clicker is about 1.5" across and takes up no space.
Oh all right, it isn't too big then.
The good thing (for me) is that it means I can now easily use my torrent
client on the Linux box and not have to worry about turning the Windows PC
to load uTorrent all the time. It gives me so much more flexibility on
using my Linux box overall, as I've not got enough space for two screens,
etc, etc.
Really, I should install Linux of some flavour on my backup system
(K6-2+/550 & lots of SDRAM so it is no slouch), because I have no
experience of it and am missing out badly.
The bad thing is, that I need to transfer my ukrm-nova torrents to the linux
box, which will take some time.
Cross-over cable? (Enough time to go on holiday during the file
transfer.)
Nah, it's rebuilding and reseeding the torrents that'll take some time.
(Donington commentator : "Stoners Ducati is powerful enough to suck a
baseball up a hosepipe." (or very similar) What?
Ooh-er - never tried that. Good luck.
Nah, it's easy, but as I originally seeded a few torrents, I've got the
hassle of doing it all again for about a dozen or so.
