Bike hire in Milan
|
Going to Milan on business the first week of June, I'm thinking of
renting a bike to get between the hotel and worksite with a couple
of free days at the weekend to explore/hoon/bimble a bit.
Can anyone recommend a decent bike hire firm, or ones to avoid? I'm
not too picky about what bike to be honest, so long as it's got
hard bags and a topbox would be nice.
I've found this outfit, are the prices within reason or not?
|
Which outfit? Those are all solos.
|
Thank you CT, for taking care of that.
I can just about see myself piloting a Ural or Dnepr outfit around the
roundabouts of Milan. For perhaps a handful of milliseconds before it
all goes wrong, that is. Still, I might collect a scooterist or three
in the process, and what would be the harm in that?

So long as you remember that you're steering with the throttle, rather than
the handlebars, you should be fine.

apples and oranges I know, but they're charging more per day for a V-
strom 650 than I'm paying for a Merc A140 for a week, in Malaga in
September.
|
actually not quite "more in Euros that I'm paying ..... in pounds".
Still, bike hire is clearly *much* more expensive than car hire,
despite the difference in the purchase price of the vehicles.
Insurance, maybe?

Italian vehicle hire is much more expensive than Spain. About double for a

I have rented in Italy, but it was 10 years ago, and theres no way I
can remember what it cost - I don't remember thinking it was high,
mind.

Fiat Panda/Ford Ka. I paid £158 in Naples & £75 in Reus.
Although, I agree that the bike hire rates are eye wateringly high. They'd
only need to rent out a Vstrom for about 6 weeks to get the whole purchase
cost back.

I'll just pop my head in the door monday AM and let them know I'll
be in Malaga for the week, and they can text me on my mobile if
anything important comes up. Thanks.
It does seem rather eye-wateringly dear for a mere 650 class bike,
but I suspect losses due to prangs aren't uncommon given the
Italian traffic conditions, and riders in an unfamiliar locale[1] on
an unfamiliar bike.
[1] Monza track day...?

Get plenty of accident insurance, I was in Milan last year and the traffic
is erm challenging!

Heh. The Amalfi Coast road was interesting. The buses, dustcarts etc give
way to nothing. Amazing what gaps a Fiat Panda will fit through...

I'll have a word with one of my colleagues at work tomorrow, if you
want.
|
By all means do. I've got to book the flight fairly soon so
I'm currently trying to decide whether to bother staying for
the w/e or not.
|
Here's the reply. Dunno if it's helpful or not. Bike rent apparently is
not very popular in Milan; it is more common to rent scooters in the
touristic places.
|
Same in Naples/Sorrento: more scooter hire shops than the Costa Brava

One my friend and colleague has heard of is:
Available in English and they have either BMW motorbikes or small
scooters. The prices look a bit pricey to me, but it's slightly cheaper
than the URL you posted.

I don't know about reason or somesuch but they seem to be in line with most
European bike rental prices that I've seen, yes.
|
|
That's a bit steep.
Not Milan, but when I've hired a bike on the Algarve, it has been 220
euros / week for a CB500, a tad more for a Transalp.
