GWRAA web site blows a tire
|
I'm a member of GWRAA and log into the web site to check the news and
read the boards but guess what, even though I'm logged in.. your not
allowed to post to the boards as it wants another password..total
lameness so I'll post where I know it will be seen and none of the run
around.
Questions:
My local GW dealer got a 01 KT1200LT BMW/ABS with 75k mileage in the
other day which was traded for a new Harley (don't ask me?) ..must be a
change in life thingie. Anyway,I can tell it was well taken care of
with only a few bug chips.
Anyway,I'm tempted. My 88 GW has the same mileage and needless to say I
truely enjoy it but it doesn't have ABS which I'd really like and
prolly the only reason I'd considered a newer bike. My question is..how
does the BMW handle compared to the GW,will this trade be a technoligy
step up and what are the downsides.

According to everything I've read about the KT1200LT, it'll outhandle a
Goldwing in every aspect. Probably not *quite* as roomy or "luxurious", but
a better handling bike.

The 1800's are about equal to the KLT. The earlier ones handle somewhat
less well.
If your dealer won't allow you a test ride, get another dealer.

The BMW K1200LT will out handle the GW any old day on any old road. That
75K, however, may be requiring some major work.. That may be why it was

Major work? Unlikely, and only if the owner never performed any
maintenance on it. There are LTs out there with a half-million miles on
them, still running just fine. I see them regularly at the BMW rallies.
I'd guess that the owner decided on a life-style change and simply
wanted a Harley. Maybe his buddies all ride Harleys and he didn't feel
like he fit in. As mystro'd suggested.
75,000 miles on a K1200LT is getting close to being "broken in."
Here's one story: I've a friend who lives near Washington, DC who rides
an LT. He weighs nearly 450 pounds, his wife is close to 200 pounds,
they carry enough gear to live in luxury whilst traveling, and this
summer they hit a road construction "pothole" and cracked the rear
suspension. The bike has nearly 250,000 miles on it.

traded in.

Runs perfectly,I'm fairly convinced anyone who put 75k on a bike in a
fairly short time also took care of that engine if the outside is any
indication..mileage doesn't scare me but changing from a GW does. :)

As a K1200LT owner, and 1800 and 1500 Rider at different times. The
LT is superior in my opinion. My wife also prefers the pillion on the
LT. It is a bit more to handle at low speeds than the GW, but never
any real problem.
