Question for BMW's
|
I was wondering if there is a News Group for BMW Motorcycles, or any other
IP group that specializes in BMW's.
I have trouble removing and reinsalling a new steering lock on my 1972 R75
any one have some information on how to proceed with this task, I sure would
appreciate some help on that.

In addition to airheads and ibmwr, you can also try
the boxerworks message boards:
and Duane Ausherman's site
Good luck

There's a brass pin that holds the cover to the frame.
It's not threaded, just a drive pin what presses into a hole
above the lock cylinder. You need to extract that pin.
One way to do it is to try to get a screwdriver between the cover
and the frame when the cover is partly closed, and try to pry the
cover out a bit. Another way is use a small claw hammer wtih the
claw behind the cover, and tap on the head of the hammer with
another hammer to try to force the cover off. It's a tough one
because there's no real way to get a punch behind the cover to
force it off from the backside.
Once you get it a bit loose you can use two small screwdrivers
as pullers under the head of the pin, to remove it.
Once the pin and cover are out of the way, use your existing key
to remove the cylinder from the headset of the bike. Basically
you just pretend you are unlocking the headset, and instead of
having the cylinder stop at the cover, it will pop right out
because of the spring under it.
You do have the key, right?
