Thoughts on a Yamaha V-Star 650 Silverado



I just bought an '82 Suzuki GS650GL a week or so ago, but my son's
friend has his eyes on it and I'm afraid it'll be his by November.
That's OK since I got it just to get back into riding and I had planned
on picking a more recent (possibly new) bike in January.

I'm looking at a slightly used '05 Yamaha that my local dealer has for
sale now.

What's the word on those bikes? They look like Harleys, but they are
only 650's.
Before making any decisions, demo a Roadliner.


I'm also toying with a Honda Shadow VLX 750.
Honda VTX1300 has the most bang for the buck and you'll
never outgrow it.
I think you should read Bob's post re: UJM popularity revisited.

I know many people like metric cruisers but I agree with Bob that UJMs are
just better, more comfortable, better handling and faster, hehe.
Underpowerd, ...if you're anything like me you'll be wishing you bought
something with a tad more grunt real soon.

Low seat height make it great for short legged riders, but the same can
be said about almost any twin, except the older HD Sportsters.
Huh? The SV650 is a twin, a V-twin at that, and it doesn't have a
particularly low seat height. Ditto the Honda RC51. Ditto the Aprilia
Tuono. Ditto the Ducati 998, the Moto Guzzi , and so on.
If you mean 'a v-twin cruiser styled similarly to a Harley', then please
say so, there's plenty of twins and v-twins in particular that have
nothing whatsoever in common with the harley and its clone v-twins
other than the fact that they have a two-cylinder engine.


Shaft drive is a positive.

The 1100 isn't any bigger, side by side they are almost identical and
used 1100s are a dime a dozen, as are the 650s. Many people just grow
out of them very quickly. (not everyone)
The V-Star 1100 is nothing to brag about in the horsepower department, it's
certainly adequate but I would say, having ridden an 1100, I am pretty sure
that most folks _will_ eventually want more hp than the V-Star 650 puts out.


If I were you I'd be looking at other, larger bikes, with more cylinders
and more grunt. Used Royal Stars are really nice bikes and they're in
the wanty ads all the time for easy money.. They're a really nice
looking machine and many of them are all geared out with really nice
roomy saddlebags and windshield and other good stuff for doing nice long
day rides or commutes.
More cylinders? Two is quite enough. Four is more, but not necessarily
better. Six can be really over the top, but can also be just the right
number, depending on what you're after.
Three is the number, and the number shall be three.
Thou shalt not count unto two, unless it be only upon thy
journey to three.

Four shall be right out.



I'm just suggesting you take your time and look at a lot of bikes before
you pull the trigger.

Don't make an impulse buy.
Hell, why not. My most pleasureable bike buying experiences have all been
impulse buys. But I strongly support the idea of riding, not just looking
at, lots of bikes.
My 2002 Honda Shadow VLX Deluxe is a 600 (actually 583cc if memory
serves). I like it very much. I don't think any VLX models were made
in 750, but I would like to ride one anyway .
My hubby and I both ride V-Star 650s and have for several years. They are
well built, excellent running bikes and we're both happy with them.
Some may say they are under powered but they aren't, unless you weigh over
400 lbs, or expect to ride over 100 mph.
Top end on mine is 98 mph and that's really faster than I need, or care to
go.

Btw, the VLX is also an excellent choice.

live in a wonderful time of diversification in motorcycles. If you
have the money there are brands and models out there to feed any
passion, or maybe better described as any addiction you might have.

More and more I am thinking I need a mid weight around here to
compliment the Venture.

Love the price tag....$8,699......I just priced one up last week, by the
time it's on the road ,just under $18k NZ....bwaaahahaha, just have to
laugh or I'd cry at the exchange rate......

weight cruisers and standards. They are terrific machines often
overlooked in the quest for bigger jugs.

Add the Kawasaki 800 to your shopping list. From what I have heard it
is a capable reliable cruiser that happens to look great.
